Which tikka for me?

Looking for opinions on which tikka t3 i should go for. I am torn between the ctr and the varmint. Caliber will be 6.5 creed. I have handled both individually but haven't fired either.

CTR has better bottom metal, pic rail and threaded barrel. I'm not super excited about the barrel contour. I'm not a hunter so if its big and heavy i don't care

Varmint has crappy mag, no pic rail included, not threaded, but has the heavy contour barrel and stainless.

A couple things about my plans. I will most likely upgrade to a chassis after some time behind it. Also, I don't really care about a muzzle brake. I don't have a brake on any of my rifles.

Seems I'm better suited for the varmint? Any experience or guidance is appreciated. Thanks

Lets face it, the standard stock on varmint or CTR is not great. Maybe a bit better than some plastic injection moulded stocks but still a waste of time. If you look at the aftermarket floor plate offerings for example from Atlasworx it is not too expensive and allows for a variety of AICS mag options with a composite stock .... or go chasis with AICS mag . Which means if you prefer a varmint barrel then go for it. An aftermarket rail with 20 MOA might be better than the 0 MOA on the CTR. Or just go Spuhr mount directly on the dove tail rail. Tikkas are great and have plenty aftermarket options.

i got a little dilemna as yours in the past for a 243.

i choose a varmint rifle but i put on a ctr tikka stock and ctr metal parts. i got a long bolt little part for it and to me this is the best of both world. i added a 20 moa aftermaket rail and golden we were.

enjoy your selection.

Only benefit of the CTR over the Varmint is that the CTR is threaded for a muzzle brake. You had said that you wanted to switch to a chassis in the future so the 10rd mag deal on the CTR is moot. The CTR also come with a 0 MOA rail which might as well be welded on as removing it to go to a 20 can sometimes be a pain in the hoop. I'd stick with the varmint and have it threaded when to buy the chassis. Plus, it's $300.00 less than the CTR to boot.

Thanks. I agree with you.

Where can I get it $300 less? I can get a ctr with 24" barrel for $1220, $1295 for the varmint.

Barrel contours are similar, if you don't want a brake and you will be installing in a chassis later the CTR metal and mag are a waste for you, however new price gets you the CTR for less money like you have already mentioned. The mag on the Varmint is not crappy, I have had several Tikkas that I ran with the polymer mags and I never had an issue. I guess it is a toss up really, get which ever one you find first or for the best deal.

Varmint 100%, spuhr direct mount, yodave trigger spring, chassis of your choice, get the barrel threaded.
I had a ctr and sold it for a Varmint.

Ctr i would only buy hit with a 20’’ for hunting.

Either will do the job, and yes, the barrel will be fine with a 5 shot string, no issues there. The Varmint will have a bit of a longer barrel which can be nice if you want a bit more velocity.

On the two I have removed to put 20moa rails on, came off fairly easy. Remove the screws, one I had to tap with a rubber mallet and the second one I was able to pop off with my fingers

I've had some tough and easy ones, one was so glued on I had to bust out the drill to remove the head of the screw. It happens though.

Is the barrel contour heavy enough on the ctr for 5 shot strings or does it heat up and hurt accuracy?

I have a CTR in 6.5CM, and it consistently puts 5 rounds in under 1/2 moa, down to under 3/8 moa on a good day. My rifle is stainless with the 24" barrel, and I recently added a B&C target type stock. The stock is fairly beefy, but works well for target work.
