New PAL owner, looking to get about 5 SKSs

Ok so an sks is like 200 bucks
rebarelling an sks will be like 500 bucks

why?

Hey it's your money, but still... why?

Thats like putting in a new engine on a 2004 chevy cavalier because you expect better performance...

Oh to be clear I most likely will not do that I just mentioned it as it is something I am curious about as for example here in the UK we've had Lee Enfields getting brand new barrels made in the last year and they have performed quite a bit better than many with original barrels in very good condition.

right, but a Lee-Enfield is a stronger foundation to start with.

Good shout! I'll definitely check out the calgary shooting centre as I can pop in there easily. Trade Ex looks good too!
Another vote for Tradeex and also weimajack, you can access him in one of the sponsor or dealer networks and or get access to the EE. Good luck, still the best deal out there, try to buy as many as you can before C-71 comes into effect.
Welcome to Canada and good luck.

That sucks, I would be curious about getting one re-barrelled with a newly made barrel just to see how it performs.

Those are still around. they just don't look as pretty as they used to and might have force matched numbers and the like. Because of the sheer numbers of these there are still a lot of diamonds in the rough to be had. Paying a visit in person could be quite worthwhile.

Russian
Chinese
Yugo
Chinese {Chrome} Guard
49' Russian
Bonus: Bubba's SKS

There's a decent start list..all available here, just keep an eye {EE/Vendors} or use the Search function. Cheers .. ~

Get 1949 Russian SKS and one from 1950s if you want to collect. Once you get them, you can play "spot the difference"

I came accross Chinese one for $199, but cannot recall the store

havent you heard about a kid putting in $10,000 sound system in a $5000 car before? lol.

This is the reason why hunters will be only allowed to hunt with hand made wooden spears, in near future!

Nope they already got us on that one, thanks to an American filming his bear hunt with a spear that is now banned.....yet you can still hunt bears with a crossbow or arrows which a little flying spears so maybe if you throw the spear instead of holding it when you kill the bear it will be ok.

Start collecting on EE, Anyone with 5 SKS's or more is unlikely to sell them in bulk unless there short on $ to me they are $800-1200 guns that sell for 200-$400 avg based on materials and finish compared to the cost of new firearms today. While you may get a slightly better group with say a Savage Axis in 7.62x39 there is no chance it will hold up to the use and abuse that the SKS will the metal is of superior quality and the wood stock alone on a similar rifle would be an upgrade equivalent to the cost of many SKS's......this stands the same for many milsurp rifles.

Are you looking to collect 5 SKS ? of different types or to have one for the whole family?

What an earth was that person on about? one has no clue how the purchase of goods relates to people's rights to hunt.

I am to put it simply loving the fact that something that would likely cost ÂŁ800 in my home country costs circa ÂŁ145 in Canada, I see it as my right to own many. I enjoy the idea of not seeing one on a rack but 5 in a row, quantity is a quality of its own after all.

I would venture that I would start with 5 different ones and then perhaps gain multiples of the more common variants.

EE is your friend.

If I am in your shoes, I'd buy first SKS from any vendor that offers the cheapest price, just to get familiar with the platform. Next browse EE and buy any SKS that is $250 and below. Keep them if you like them and sell what you don't like.

Quality I'm looking for when purchasing SKS is:
- Serial number matching, magazine not matching is Ok these days as most $250 ones will be.
- Bolt and bolt carrier are not painted black (original ones are silver finish)
- No export mark on the barrel (usually under gas tube)
- If I intend to shot it, chrome lined barrel is a must (mid 51 and after, also chinese)
- In original stock and not bubba'd.

The barrel in refurbed SKS are all pretty good. Chrome lined barrel last a long time. And SKS didn't go through wars like SMLE or Mosin so the barrel condition is generally good in terms of accuray.

Also stock deep on ammo.

Totally agree - it's becoming a Whack a Mole of different potentialities. The OP being English and quoting prices in pounds ups the ante big time lol.

Here is a thought..Just buy one new restricted AR..
Not off the EE.. those prices are close to retail or over..
Add one more to the total ..

Well of course I'm going to purchase a WK180C and a ATRS, I'm curious as to when the "Badger" shall if at all be released.

As I am in the Red Rifles section I felt best to stick to Red Rifles for this thread.
