time to face reality- ruger 1 .303british

Ok,
Im one of very few who own a Ruger #1 in the 303 chambering that was offered in recent years-------- yesss, theres a few CGN'rs with one too... i feel the connection.

My connection with this is now the ANZAC Army, NZ Deer Cullers era , Me being Ausytralian and now fond of NZ mountain hunting...theres a whole lotta warm and fuzzies behind it.

What im contemplating if where am i at with this rifle, round and combination........

As of today its a bit of a safe queen that has taken a couple of easy goin days in the field an accounted for half a dozen critters though seldom will it come in contact with the nature or the conditions mother nature can dish out......

is it precious?


Seeing as the Ruger 1 303 wasnt the best thought out product, should i just get into it an use it for more than what its worth???

What happens at the end of the day when its, not much chop anymore?
Is it worth anything more than what it is, a ruger 1 chambering albeit the 303 brit model we all know a bout?
Alot of thoughts, would love to start a discussion here

Giday Mate. Sorry just had to say that . I own a few Ruger no1 a tropical 375 a lightweight 243 and a American liberty model in 22-250 . I like them very much but in my humble opinion they are over valued for what they are . Have fun with them and shoot the hell out them. The 303 is a novel chambering use it . My two cents .

If Ardent can lug a H&H double or custom Mauser while guiding in Northern BC, I don't see any reason not to carry a .303 No.1 if it makes you feel warm and fuzzy.
Only 2 rifles chambered in .303 interest me enough to consider owning them, the Ruger No.1 and Winchester 1895. If you aren't using it and could use the cash sell it. I don't know if any of us can say how they will retain or if they will increase value in the future. Demand for wood and blued single shot .303's doesn't seem to be increasing in my little part of Canada. You may be able to do a straight trade with someone for another No.1 or rifle in a cartridge or configuration you would enjoy more or optics if that appeals to you. A stainless laminate No.1 in 7mm Rem Mag, .30-06, .270 Winchester or .22-250 Rem would probably move me for my wallet quicker than any other.

I have lost count of the number of animals I have taken with my .303 chambered Ruger, from coyotes to moose.
Nothing wrong with either the action or the cartridge.

I have a Ruger no 1 in 303 Brit that compliments my BSA Lee Speed nicely,both are nice examples of quality deer stalking rifles

I have a gorgeous No. 1 303 I bought from our resident rugeraholic. Only gun I've ever owned that I've had difficulty bringing out in the bush.

Kind of like how I don't like ratbagging my "new" truck. A little bit of paint wear this winter and now I'm ready to install the Peace River pin stripes.

I hunt with my 303 Ruger. On my last hunt, in some particularly nasty blowdown, I found myself tripping and throwing my body between the trees and that beautiful walnut stock. I am sneaking up on 60, and don't think that I can do that much longer, hah hah.

Ruger No.1's are a hunter's rifle... they are made for judicious application of a single shot to the vitals... they are not range toys... walnut is a restorable medium, no need to baby it. Also, the .303 Brit cartridge is very capable on medium game, so all-in-all, it is a perfect package for field use.

I had one, but sold it. I preferred my No1 Whelen and used both rifles for the same hunting, so the Brit hit the road.

I think the 303 was one of better offerings on the #1. Classic old flanged case in a classic rifle in a Commonwealth country with a long history with the 303. What more could one ask for?

I say keep it and "hunt the guts out of it".

I had a #1 in 22-250 I gave to my young Son in Horsefly B.C. I had the 'opportunity' to replace it with an old custom, Winchester High Wall in 219 Donaldson Wasp, topped with an 'area appropriate' 10X J.UNERTAL scope.
