35 whelen build

Does the rebore involve rechambering the rifle for the new cartridge?

Do you need to supply the chamber reamer for more unusual chamberings?

No rebore is just a rebore, chambering is another operation, though Bob can chamber too and is extremely fair on the pricing. For a .35 Whelen from a .30-06 donor you’ll only need to hand turn the reamer to cut the neck, a DIY operation in the time it takes to drink a coffee.

You’ll need to supply the reamer and gauges, if a one off build for you just rent from CH4D. I get them to ship rental reamers to a US post box not sure if they do Canadian addresses, but it’s only $40 for a rental and includes headspace gauges.

This said, rebored and chambered with Bob it is still less than a new blank from a quality maker. And he keeps the bluing perfect while at it, no refinish required, big savings there too.

Although I'm not a fan of the Whelen here's what I'd build.

'03 Springfield. Have the action cleaned up and new trigger installed. Decent 24" barrel with peep and a hooded ramp sight. Deep bluing. QR rings and a 3x Leupold in gloss of course.
Spend a little on some nice walnut and have it stocked Sedgely Springfield Sporter style. Red recoil pad would finish it.

There’s really no cost difference starting with a good M98. There is or was a good VZ24 action on the EE for under $400 if memory serves. Or pick any Mauser sporter and rebore. Frankly it would be goofy to do a 783 or Savage in a nice handmade stock, like putting Rita MacNeil in a really nice dress and calling her Shania. She’ll get lots of looks, just the wrong kind.

A few days ago, I was searching custom rifles online line and found a matched pair of full route custom rifles built on left hand Savage action. Both were very nicely done but in the end were still just Savages. Kinda like building a million dollar house in a trailer park. :)

OTOH .... A simple rebarrel on a 783 with factory walnut stock would be cheap and easy and still have one of the nicer trailers in the park without overspending the neighborhood.

Southpaws do the dangdest of things....

Good heads up on the reboring gents...I'm tempted to have a Winchester Extreme Weather Rebored to 375 H&H, slap some sights on and she's perfect for anything and anywhere in North America.

You guys are going to make me take my Whelen out of retirement! I haven’t used it as my moose rifle since I got my .375 Ruger. I even stole the McMillan that was on the Whelen to put on the .375. But that 20” .375 Ruger and it's one shot kill on the three last moose makes it hard to switch back. I’m keeping the Whelen for when I get old enough to think that the .375 Ruger kicks too much!
