First handgun

If you are reloading then 9mm, .40 or .45 it's up to you.
Reloading .45 is still expensive compared to 9mm and the recoil might be tough for a new shooter to overcome.

If you can afford it, buy an ugly Ruger 22/45 (.22LR) and a 9mm pistol. You can practice on the .22LR all day for what you'll spend on a couple boxes of centerfire ammo and you'll have a rookie friendly gun for your guest to shoot while you refine your skills on the 9mm.

This is good advice.

Glock 17 9X19 3rd generation all the way, hands down.

Highly visable sights, accurate as a MOFO, cheap to shoot, extremely confortable (Hogue sleeve rubber grip), and a sharp trigger reset for quick and consistant hits.

9mm Luger round for sure for your first gun; cheap, accurate, light recoil, and a blast to shoot. .22 cal is way to wimpy...you might as well get a .177 cal pellet gun
