Well the sporter long lee arrived yesterday & here are some pics

Didn't count on the barrel being cut. Bore is just ok, strong rifling with some pitting in the grooves. I though I got lucky with the follower spring as it was advertised as broken but it was just sitting in the bottom of the mag. Then I mounted it & broke it when I tried to get the follower out again. I could just keep it as a shooter but owning a sporter with the handle desporterizer would make me feel, well, dirty. Any ideas?

That's not a bad idea. You could even redo the SMLE wood to look like a long lee and no one would notice unless you put two side by side.

All you need to do to mount a JC hider is turn the barrel to the right diameter for 3/4" or so. The hider presses on, with front sight included. Drill two tiny holes for pins, voila...

Probably a little less than a little less than great...I'd think it would be more desirable as is.

There are gunsmiths that can easily extend that barrel, it's done all the time. If the action is good...and wood can be found.

I'd chop it, mount a rugged 4X scope on it, strip the wood, krylon the whole thing, add a couple of layers of matt clearcoat, then make up a story about how it came that way and it wasn't your fault. Then minimize how much you like it and use it when you talk to your friends.

That is a rather old sporterization. Its not really restorable. Apart from the barrel and stock, the holes in the left of the receiver for the long range sight have been plugged. I'd be inclined to clean it up, and use it as is.
Somehow the idea of using it to make a tanker, jungle carbine, or some other project doesn't appeal to me.
If you wanted to continue the sporterization, it could be rebuilt to resemble a Lee Speed sporter of the pre-WWI period.
