I have someone who is willing to part with a nice condition, not new, but not beat up Belgian Browning Auto 5, 20 Ga Mag, it is marked with * * on the barrel which I believe is modified ( will it shoot steel ok?), what a fair buying and selling price? Forestock is not split, I would call it a 7-8/10. I am working on pictures but the seller is not around the forearm at this time. Thanks in advance for the help.

I am waiting on pictures, I can assure that the forestock is not cracked, it's an auto 5 wood in nice shape, no rust, model year I believe to be 68-69, choke is a fixed modified or improved modified, it is a 20 Ga with vent Rib barrel.

** is modified, **- is improved cylinder
Browning has a complete discussion of shooting steel in their guns. Belgian Auto 5 guns are not recommended for steel shot. Fitted with a later Japanese choke tube barrel it could be acceptable to use steel shot.
Without pictures we cannot put a value on the gun. 20 gauge is certainly more in demand than an Auto 5 in 12 gauge, and the vent rib makes it more desirable than the plain field barrel.
1968/69 falls in the middle of the salt wood years, so you need to check carefully for any signs of salt corrosion at the wood/metal junction. You can check for corrosion on the butt plate screws, by pulling one.
There is a lot of discussion of the salt cured wood problem with Browning shotguns between 1966 and 1972 on the Internet.

$600 might be a starting point if you wanted to pay top dollar.

I have seen Browning auto 5's in 20 gauge magnum with mod choked barrels in excellent condition sell for $800, no problem, usually more.. Browning does not recommend firing steel shot out of Belgium barrels, but with today's modern made steel loads with there thick plastic wads designed to hold the shot and protect the barrel as the steel shot travels threw it. You should have no problems with numberd shot fired threw a mod choked barrel. Browning did use Salt cured stocks around that time but mostly on high grade firearms and superposed and safari rifles. The auto 5 in 20 gauge is a desirable shotgun, especially with upland/small game hunters and collectors. If you are strictly looking for a waterfowl gun, you may want to consider the 12 gauge version which is much more common and can be bought for less. Good luck.

If this gal is in at least 75% condition, $600 would be a really good buy on your end.
Been a few on the EE pushing a g-note and while I don't know if they succeeded, I sure
wouldn't pay that for one.

Git dem photo's awn upp'ear furr kripes sake.

A realistic price 3” vent rib mod choke 7 out of 10 condition would be low end 650 top end 900 $’s depending on how bad you want it . As for all the comments about pics and so on not necessary . That’s why nra has s system for rating condition as long as you follow the guide lines it works perfectly. The ones on Ee lately at the top end have not sold . 750-850 would be a fair price at both parties

7/10 is not an NRA description of condition, and unfortunately, most posters on CGN appear unable or unwilling to use NRA condition descriptions with rigor.

I picked it up, along with another that I picked up by chance. The original I was talking about is all of good to very good grade. Pictures will be up once I fihure out an image host that is easy.... I don't do tech well.

The type wear on the blueing that the gun has tells me that it is well used but well kept overall. I also wouldn't say its in VG to excellent condition either. I think a rating of “good” would be more inline with what is visible

Agreed not excellent after reading the grading closer, maybe good to very good though. Definitly used but well maintained.
