Building an Ar-10 to be non-restricted

So here's my idea: build an AR-10, that way I can take it to my parents and shoot away. BUT!! I've heard horrible stories about guys building AR-10s only for them to be classified .308 caliber AR-15s... So how do I make sure this doesn't happen? What is the difference mechanically/technically between the two? (Aside from caliber.) And what's the best AR-10 receiver set to start with?

When you say "build" do you mean machine your own upper and lower or simply assemble an upper and lower that a manufacturer already makes? BIG difference!!
For the latter there are a few options. Our Modern Hunter is very close to an AR10 and has NR status, the Stag 10 is an AR10 with NR status, yet many other AR10s such as DPMS, ASA,Armalite are RESTRICTED despite being AR10s, so it makes little sense.
Making your own upper and lower is a crap shoot at best, ask me, I know. There is absolutely ZERO rationale for how the feds classify firearms. The feds can and will attempt to classify any semi auto as restricted or prohib if they can. There is NO guideline as to precisely what makes a semi auto restricted apart from barrel length.

IF you figure to machine your own, you will have to submit an example to the feds for classification. This applies to semi autos in general now.

To be fair, I think most folks who don't work in the industry view the term "build" on a simpler level. Building a house is really just assembly too though some might refer to it as manufacturing a home..... for most gunnies the term "build" means starting from a pile of parts.

I'm more curious about your last comment though..... so if a guy "makes" a receiver at home, using an existing non restricted semi auto blue print , it must be sent in for classification even if it is for personal use only? This is news to me but I kinda burned out my attention span lately LOL

Agreed on the semantics, I was just trying to figure out what his intent was. Maybe he has a milling machine?

Any semi/full automatic firearm or handgun must be submitted, according to the folks at the SFSS/RCMp "lab", to determine legal classification. Personal use/not for sale does not apply to these. I have been designing , prototyping and manufacturing many types of firearms for many years and literally all of the semi auto/full auto stuff has had to be inspected. Even the oddball 1 of things that I created for personal satisfaction of being able to say, yes I created something different.
Anything manual they don't seem to care about.

Can someone quote me the actual article of law that states that a firearm HAS TO be sent to the rcmp for "classification"?

Is it a centerfire firearm? Yes
Is the firearm more that 660mm OAL in firing condition? Yes
Is the barrel 470mm+? Yes
Is is a prescribed prohibited/restrict firearm? No
Is it a variant of a prescribed prohib/restricted? No
Does it contain any part/accesory/etc that is prohibited? No
Does it have the numurals "47" anywhere? No
Is it black? No

:then it is NR.

Obviously the last 2 are jokes...

I know that "the way its done" is different, I don't care about any such responses... I'm actually looking for any law(s) that state that firearms MUST be inspected/classified/FRT'd!

The forward assist comes in handy when quietly closing the action with the charging handle, like when you are hunting. Sometimes the extractor doesn't snap over the rim with just buffer spring pressure. I suppose you could push the BCG with your thumb from the ejection port but the forward assist is easier. I like it :).

Forward assist is an extra neat but unneeded gadget on a hunting rifle....people have been hunting with semi's for many years without FA....think BAR, 740, win 100, etc, etc....how many semi auto shotguns have FA?

THAT is the way it SHOULD be!!!
Unfortunately the gubberment has allowed a bunch of bureaucrats waaaaaay too much power to make up crap as they please. They love to play the variant game whenever possible.

I'd just bring up the erroneous 'fact' that the RCMP states that the AR15 is a variant of the M16...

I guess they had access to a time machine as the M16 came after the AR15.

#variantsarejokes.

(I'm not even going to start on the whole Valmet M78/88 stupidity along with the Ruger 10/22 magazine dual use bs).

On another note, when are you guys going to do a MH/MV sale again? I stepped down from a MD SLR since I like the MV way better ;)

Don't get me started on the amount of "stupid" that is in the firearms regulations.

We still make and sell our MH and MV rifles. Fact is we actually have receiver sets on hand to build on. Furniture may take a bit of time to get in depending on what you are wanting.
Let us know what you are wanting.
