I tried my 45-70 for the first time in a few years...man, has my eyesight gone downhill! I never was really very happy with the semi buckhorn rear sight; now it is almost embarrassing.

1/Does anyone have any comments & maybe a link to a good crisp rear sight that would fit, and

2/has anyone used the fibre-optic front & rear sights?

I installed Warne 2 piece scope mount bases that I attach with Leupold quick detachable rings a Leupold 2X-7X compact scope.

When I don't want the scope on I remove it and install with just one screw my XS Sights Ghost Ring Backup sight.

For aging eyes ghost ring sights are the way to go because you do not ever focus on the rear sight you only focus on the front sight.

I tried the ghostring on my XLR for exactly the same reason as you did. It didn't resolve my problem, so I went back to the semi-buckhorn. Nothing against the ghostrings, but I would recommend that you make sure that you can either return them or sell them if they don't work for you either. I sold mine here at a minor loss. :)

I too am lookin for decent sights for the 1895.

Do you need to have any gunsmithing done to install them??

The least expensive, and a very effective way to go ,is a williams rear peep sight, and a firesight up front. A trip to the eye doctor is also in order! I'm not being a smart ass, I changed my prescription and my shooting improved alot, with open sights.
