Is the sight sleeve for the rear sight on an Israeli 7.62 Mauser the same as for the original K98 in 8mm? Pretty sure it would be the same but want to make sure before I order a new one.

Cheers

Ok, found one from another cgn'er.. (thanks Adrian)
Reading up on this it looks like I can either do it with solder or red loctite .
Solder is the original way but I'm wondering if a simple propane torch ad plumbing solder is going to do the job. Originally they used a high lead content solder but everything I see at home depot is lead free. Is this going to work?
Alternatively using red loctite, is this going to provide a solid enough long lasting bond? Do I have to make sure I get 100% of the old solder off?
Any tips from someone who's done it would be appreciated.

Cheers

Joe

There may be enough solder on the barrel and sight sleeve already, just requiring you to heat it up enough for it to re-melt. I've done that with front sights successfully. If there isn't enough solder, epoxy may be another solution. I've done that as well but it was on a gun I never intend to fire so not sure how well it would hold up. I suspect there wouldn't be an issue but can't say for sure. It was Acraglass that I used.

Cheers. I prefer not to use epoxy as I will be shooting it. I'll be replacing the existing sleeve and the new one has no solder so I'm thinking I'll need more.
If loctite will work, it's the easiest, but if there is a chance it'll come loose I'll do the solder method.

Ordinary propane torch will do the job. You'll need solder and flux. If you can't find lead solder in HD or a hardware store, try The Source (Radio Shack) for some electronic solder. It will have a higher tin content, but should work fine. Maybe you would need rosin as flux.

I replaced a front site on an Italian SAA on time that fell out of the barrel groove with JB Weld epoxy that has held for years of use since. that gun has been inserted & pulled out of a holster probably thousands of times and if that isn't going to loosen the front site nothing will.

When the site came loose from the factory job, a miniscule little spot of silver solder was evident, not enough to heat up again and do any good...along with the resulting marring of the barrel/site finish from torch heating.

I would not attempt to use what's left over from the old sight. Just clean it all up, flux it, and have at it.

Oatey no5 flux and solid 3mm 50/50 solder is available at home hardware, or Amazon... I know what you mean, lots of places have to the lead free stuff only.

Thanks for the info. Video very helpful.
Found the lead solder. They only had no. 95 flux at Rona. Will check home hardware. I'll post pics of how it goes.

Cheers
