How many rds for combat???

Personal GPS receiver, no doubt loaded with the named routes, FOBs and patrol bases ....

Actually, there was zero landmarks in it......I had it for 'fudge factory' for nine-liners. Thanks for your concern... Maybe, if you filled out you profile, I would take you seriously. Unless you are a secret squirrel!!!!

#2 are plastic handcuffs most likely given to you by Chuck Norris or Jack Bauer

Somebody tougher than Chuck or Jack gave them to me...;) Used 'em too!!!

Geebus... You'd neverget away with all this talk about "load out" gear over on ArfCom...:D

I mean... revealing these secretes to the enemy might cause the downfall of western democracy and civilization:runaway:

Now I know why I expected post #4 to be someone writing OPSEC!!! in all caps :D.

I figure my load out (a bit more kill'n tools less medical crap like Starlight's pic) weighed in at 35-40lbs, plus another 14lbs or so in body armor and helmet plus a 10lb weapon so in the area of 65-70lbs total sometimes less sometime a bit more. It's not bad when distributed properly on a good rig ...ie. a non issued one

That nugget seems to have come from the PPCLI Roto 1 or 2. There were several blogs and internet digests that were circulating as everybody was very curious to know how the boys were doing and what was working. The way I remember the 6 and 4 comment was, 6 mags to start the firefight and 4 to finish it.

So in other words ... 6 to spray and pray for the first few minutes until you get your senses back, and 4 for aimed rounds ? :p

As for the GPS issue, have a feeling that memory comes to mind in the solution regarding OPSEC ...

There is no GPS issue, unless of course you are captured without zeroing it, then again such sensitive things as routes, friendly locations etc are not usually inputted anyway, ..in the words of Officer Barbrady..move along nothing to see here :)

BTW it's not spray and pray it called "winning the firefight" by overwhelming the bad guys with a heavy volume of fire,it can take a few mins or hours depending on how well trained the bad guys are, the taliban usually stop playing when our rounds start hitting meat :)

Thanks to all of you who were in a position to answer the question for accepting the burden of protecting the rest of us.

just wondering if your qm's were willing to issue you guys as many mags (within reason) as you were willing to carry or did you have to buy the extras on your own dime?

Mags are like water..you ask for them and you get them.....until they run out then the horse trading with the Yanks starts or Brownells catalog comes out :)

We had no problems getting magazines

There has been some back and forth offline about operational security (OPSEC). I didn't intend to accuse anyone in particular of breaking secrecy, just to say it can happen very easily. The risk that locations of routes and patrol bases will leak out when any GPS receiver is lost. The bad guys have people who know technology and they could use our own information against friendlies. That's all.

GPS receivers are great for storing locations and routes. Some clever folks have even figured out how to transfer classified data for military purposes onto military-owned civilian-pattern and personal-civilian GPS devices. The military ones have a zeroize function. The civilian ones can zeroize, but they have failsafes to keep Bob the Hunter from accidentally cancelling everything.

Tell you what next time you want to make a flippant comment like your quote....don't it saves a lot of grief, stay in your lane, watch and listen if a cartography question comes up you will be the first to know :)

Most of our section commanders and a few other troops carried personal GPS for when we were dismounted from our vehicle GPS. Just made it more easy... Instead of radio'ing your vech and ask for the GPS location and that would only give you the vech location not where the section commander wanted the Helo for 9 liner....As Will stated...

Takes 1 second to zero and equipment.... Thats a 5.56mmm

In Afghanistan I drew 5 extra mags from my CQ to bring my total up to 10 mags. 3 of the mags he gave me were American aluminum mags. I think he may have been given those by the American QM who were trying to dump all the extra gear they had so they wouldn't have to go through the hassle of bringing it all with them when we took over their vehicle compound. Some of the guys I knew grabbed a bunch of buckshee M203 rounds from the same Yanks before they left. In Afghanistan mags and ammo are easy to acquire.

To back on topic of how much ammo you guys carry...

How many chocolate bars do you guys carry? Do they go in your chest rig/tac-vest for quick access or do you keep them in you patrol bag?

Yeah... and what about important stuff like Kibo(sp?) tickets and foot powder?
