Hold up one minute there my friend. Was Canada ever invaded or occupied by the Nazis ??..................No....but the little Netherlands was and suffered greatly during the occupation way, way, way back then. And now today (and the past 11 years) Holland hosts the largest display of German wartime vehicles in the planet, seems they have moved on and can appreciate a vehicle for what it is, a vehicle with history. No where was anyone "glorifying nazis", dressing up like one or making any political statement supporting national socialism at Colonne Notek and certainly not going to happen at Militracks either. So by your reasoning the Canadian War Museum should take the Mercedes staff car and German armour/vehicles out of public viewing ??




Next May I will be attending Militracks

Actually that's debatable

The Nazis did land in Labrador during the war and set up a weather station there, which wasn't discovered until 1977. It's not known how long their soldiers were actually on the ground there, so technically, they did invade "Canada".

On the other hand, Newfoundland wasn't a part of Canada at that time, so also technically, they didn't invade Canada.

Gets kinda confusing.

Japs fired on the West coast, does that constitute an invasion ? silly argument, just appreciate the vehicles.

No it doesn't.

The Germans sank 4 ships docked in Portugal Cove; shooting at the country and actually landing troops on the country are two entirely different things.

I am loving the vehicle pics though; I'd give my left nut for one of those Kubelwagens.

An honest opinion, and here's my honest rebuttal. First, restoring antique anythings...in this case vehicles which take an incredible commitment and skill... is to be commended. It is not a celebration, more a brining to life of something that lived and breathed at a historic moment in time. I personally am grateful for those displaying such items as it gets me closer to that period in time like a grainy black and white photograph will never do. Even reenactors sporting German uniforms has the same effect and I can get closer to understanding the young men and women caught up in their particular moment in history. Heck, even Farley Mowat appreciated saving German vehicles and bringing a bunch back to Canada after the war. His motive was to show complacent civilians what our troops had to face 'over there'.

I would also agree our education system teaches next to no history, which is very bad. Having a little knowledge and concluding all Germans were 'nazies' is simplistic and naïve. A wholesome understanding of the real history is best and, once there, seeing German vehicles is the icing on the cake.
 
Hope you don’t own any early 20th century or late 19th century milsurp firearms. Pretty much every European nation was on the wrong side of history at some point. However, I don’t think owning pieces of military history has anything to do with the ideologies they defended

My voluntary reading of Tim Cook's books on WWI and WWII taught me far more than the "mandatory Ontario curriculum" ever accomplished... :cheers:


To sit through Grade 9 history was to think WWI only consisted of static trench warfare and of Vimy and the Somme and Passchendaele and "that gas-attack battle at Ypres"... :canadaFlag:

My uncle, who was a Brandenburger, claimed he was landed in England , as an covert observer in preparation the invasion. So . by some definition, the Germans actually invaded Britain? :confused:

Or that the Soviets killed millions when someone posts about an SKS, or Moisin, or SVT?

I was wondering however if anyone ever restores their vehicles to SS configuration? All the ID plates seem to be wehrmacht or luftwaffe?

I once had a long talk with an 'SS' re-enactor. The guy was doing it for the right reasons and I learned much.

Actually, the Germans DID invade Britain when they invaded and occupied the Jersey and Guernsey Islands, which were (and still are) a part of Great Britain.

Here's another odd occurrence for you.

During WW2, the Canadian Army had installed a coastal defense battery on the cliffs of Bell Island, in Conception Bay, Newfoundland.

One evening, this battery fired upon what they believed to be a U-boat periscope; and, as might be expected, the shells skipped off the water and landed in the town of Portugal Cove, on the other side of the bay. Fortunately, no one was injured or killed.

At the time, both Canada and Newfoundland were separate, sovereign countries, so, "technically" the military from one country fired on another country, which is usually a declaration of war.

Strange things happen during wars.

Durring the Battle of Britian, if I remember correctly, the RAF shot down a Luftwaffer aircraft, an ME110 or light bomber which made a good wheels up landing on marshy ground near the coast. When the UK Home Guard approached the German crew engaged them with small arms fire, including at least one of the aircraft machine guns. I guess we could say they invaded the UK, if only for a very short time! :)

I believe that is a night/blackout driving light. Common to see on WW2 German military vehicles.

I recall my father talking about that incident, and an amusing story concerning it.

Apparently, the next morning, an elderly farmer found an unexploded shell in his potato field. The farmer was pissed that the Canadian gunners were stupid enough to shell a friendly town, so he loaded the shell into the back of his horse drawn cart and took it to St. John's.

He brought the shell to Canada House, which was the Canadian Army headquarters in Newfoundland. When the Brass there saw the live, unexploded shell they scattered like cockroaches and didn't return until the shell was defused and removed.

Apparently afterwards, the Bell Island coastal battery were given VERY clear instructions on just where they could shoot, keeping in mind what the "backstop" was, and markers were put up to ensure that no further shells would land in the communities opposite.
