Had a great week in the bush. Five tags and five dead bears. Here's the one I shot with my .45/70 Marlin GG. One bullet was all it took. The boar went less than 20 yards. As for acutaly weight and length I don't know, but he's one of my better bears :D.

I'm six foot 215lbs, if I had to guess, I'd put this bear in around 275 + pounds.

Of the four other bears taken, two were shot with bows, one with a 12ga slug, and the last was killed with a .30-30 Marlin 336. All first time bears for these guys. More pictures to follow.

Big smiles all around - so cool! Good photos too. Congrats to all on putting it all together! Nice size bears. I bet those first timers will be back at it again. The freezers will be filling up too.

Was this a DIY hunt or did you use an outfitter?

What load did you use in 45/70? How did it perform - did you get an exit? Details please. Those Guide guns sure are good eastern woods bear guns no doubt.

This was a DIY hunt. Within a few years I'll be an Outfitter, then I can start charging .

The shot was quartering away, approximately 80 yards. The bullet used was a Winchester CXP2 300gr JHP. Double lung and fragments exited his elbow area.

200-225lb bear. my guess after dressing out 25+ of them. 275lbs is being a little generous ;) not quite 6' bear....

FRAGMEnTS??? wholy ####, 300gr bullet shouldn't fragment. I would be switching loads.

I was under impression that Blaze orange was required for big game hunting with firearms bears included. Wrong?? JITC ps in Ontario
If I may respond - in Ontario the law is you can lose the blaze orage when you arrive in your stand and are waiting out a bear. You are supposed to wear it at other times when hunting bear. Evidently bear see colour unlike deer.
But in any case - blaze orange is NOT required for picture taking sessions after the hunt I'm thinking.

Next time you can help us carry the thing the 2K back to camp on the stretcher ;).

The bullet performed exactly as it should, just like any jacketed hollow point. I won't be rushing out to buy a different load.

Fall Guy, my camp is located just south of Sudbury.

Some pre-dressed pictures right where we found him.

He was portly for his length ;).

Having some pepperettes & smokies made this year along with the usual dinner sausage. Hope they turn out. I'm always apprehensive about trying new things with my wild meat. After all, if you factor in the cost of guns / camo / hunting gear / gas / etc, the stuff must cost $100/lbs . Prime cuts saved for steaks.....nothing like a BBQ bear steak. Can't wait to here from the butcher!

looks better rotated...

.

I think a lot of people would be.

I have seen a lot of proclaimed "300 lb +" bears that I could load into the truck myself after being dressed out and I'm not exactly Randy the Natural here......:D

yup :D taken a lot of large bears hunting and guiding. only had one I think was over 350lbs. gutted 3 of us couldn't drag it more then a foot or two at a time  (over 7' nose to tail) wish we would have weighed him

bear fur really adds a lot of "visual weight" :D

great new pics, gorgeous hide on that one. looks good next to that ###y scope-free levergun ;)
