Finally Dialed in the 270 Win

Well folks, I finally got my 270 Win load all figured out for hunting season.

The load:
140gr Nosler Accubonds
58.7gr of H4831
CCI BR2
Winchester Brass
COAL: 3.348 (15 thou off the lands)

It shoots honest 1" 5 round groups. I can cherry pick a few 1/2" 3 round groups, but I am pleased with the performance. Velocity is 2955 fps. Just have to finish sighting in for my MPBR and its ready for hunting season.

The rifle is a Win Model 70 Standard In 270Win, 24" barrel. Nice walnut stock and blued metal. This one was made in the USA before manufacturing was moved to Portugal, and has the mauser based CRF action. I found it used at Ellwood Epps for $599. Yup. $599. Only issue was a small scratch in the stock. Needless to say, when I saw it I didn't waste any time deliberating. Scope is a Leupold FX-II 6x36 Duplex.

The load development took some time. I bought a box of 140 SST's to fireform the brass before experimenting with the $1 a bullet Nosler Partitions and Accubonds. Had some great groups with the SSTs with H4831 and okay groups with H4350, bigger groups with RL22. Once the brass was formed, I started loading the 130gr Nosler partitions and 140gr Accubonds. Did 10 round Satterlee tests with the new magnetospeed chronograph I ordered in the meantime. Accubonds looked very promising, Partitions less so. Loaded up 5 3 rd groups of each on some of the suspected loads and shot them with the magnetospeed again. Finally, took the tightest SD's of each and shot them for accuracy - 1" for the accubonds, 3" for the partitions (yikes.)

So where do we stand now?
I've loaded the remaining 25 Nosler Accubonds, enough for final sight in and hunting. This leaves 25 pieces of ready to load brass and 25 partitions (also still have 50 140 SSTs and 50 new pieces of Win Brass). So what's next on my load development?

Should I take the Partitions and chrony them with RL22 and H4350 looking for better results than H4831? Should I stay with H4831 and adjust seating depth or just try another set of charge weights? Should I sell off the half box of partitions and buy more accubonds? Or should I pick up a box of 140 or 150 grain partitions to see if thats what the rifle prefers? Or do I call it quits, happy with the 140gr Accubond load I have now?

My Model 70 featherweight really likes 150 grain Partitions with 58 grains of H4831 or 52 grains of H4350. 58 grains of H4831 with 140 grain Accubonds is another good load I use. If you are going to be shooting 300 yards or better I would stick with the Accubonds. The 150 grain partitions are great for heavy game.

You got a great deal on that rifle!

My Vanguard S2 chambered in 270 Winchester dotes on that 140 grain Accubond as well.

I load it in Winchester brass, fired by the old CIL 8½ primer, chased by 60.5 grains of
Vihtavuori N165.

Bullet is .020 from lands. This load regularly shoots sub-moa, and 'graphs 3027 avg for
5 shots. What is not to like? Dave.
 
I'm loading for my 270. Using 130 gr Barnes TSX bullets. I don't know if its me or the load, but I'm not getting very good groups. Load may be too hot. I'm using H4831 59 grs. 24 inch barrel on Rem 700. I'll try again and see.

Every rifle is different. My Kimber Mountain Ascent shoots well with 60 grs of H4831 with a Barnes TTSX 130 gr bullet. I would stick with H4831 and try a Nosler 130 or 140 gr Accubond.
 
The Barnes will perform very reliably, even when shot angles aren't perfect. A 24" 270 should push a 130gr in the 3000-3150 fps range depending on powder. Take a look at the Barnes 129gr LRX too, similar to the TTSX but more aerodynamic profile and more reliable low speed expansion

The deer that I have shot with them have dropped on the spot, they never took a step. The reason I started using them was the accuracy was so good in my rifle. Velocity is 3100 fps. I haven't recovered a bullet yet, so I'm anxiously waiting.
