Reloading Recipes for the 30-06 Springfield

Hello,

I decided to start a new thread on reloading recipes for the 30-06 Springfield since I have just recently purchased a Weatherby Vanguard Series 2 rifle in that caliber with a 24" sporter barrel (1:10" twist). I will use this rifle mainly for hunting whitetail deer in Northern Ontario.

I though it would be interesting for people to share their successful reloading recipes and give any tips/tricks that they have learned.

I just completed reloading and testing a batch of 30-06 reloads. I am very pleased with this initial recipe and I am working on testing a charge ladder for a 200 grain Nosler Partition in this same setup.

Bullet: Nosler 150 Partition
Powder: 65.0 grains of Hodgdon's Superformance
Primer: Winchester WLR
Case: Nosler (Full prepared cases)

C.O.A.L. 3.273"
C.B.T.O. 2.683"
Muzzle Vel. 3200 fps (using a MagnetoSpeed Sporter chronograph, Outside temperature was 28 Celsius)
Grouping size: .85 to 1.2 MOA at 100 yards
Shooting Rest: Sand bags

Notes: No pressure signs, All good. Did a proper charge ladder to work up to this load.

The Superformance powder works very well for a 180 grain bullet with a nice case fill percentage. My initial recipe is a non compressed powder charge for the 150 grain Nosler Partition.

The Hodgdon site claims 3072 fps for a compressed load of 65 grs of Superformance under a 150. Chronographs don't always agree, sometimes they produce false readings, and sometimes published loading data is based on calculations rather than with actual shooting over a chronograph. Many knowledgeable reloaders would consider 3200 awfully quick for a 150 in a .30/06 and is in fact well into the .300 magnum velocity range. I think I would reshoot your test to see if 3200 is repeatable with an average of 5 or more rounds, then if possible repeat the test with a different chronograph.

Never tried the Superformance with 150's, only 180's. [2840 in a 24"]

My pet 30-06 load is the 180 Partition or Accubond, chased by
61.5 grains of Norma MRP. My Lazerguard shoots this load extremely well.

where are you getting the Norma MRP powder from?

60 grains of h4831 with a 180 grain nosler partition gives good groups, but it is a compressed load. 20 thou off the lands, CCI primers.

Hornady 180gr with 54gr IMR4350.

If I want to hunt with a 150gr I would use my .308.

where are you getting the Norma MRP powder from?

Laid a bunch in when Budget had some. Also bought 8 lbs at a gun show.
Bought a couple of 7 lb of Bofors RP-5 from Higginsons. [same stuff, FWIW]

Use plenty of this powder, since it is dense and slow burning. Dave.

Some results of different powders a few years ago, most loads are near max powder, Rem 700 BDL 30.06 22" barrel, all bullets were 168 gr

Yes. I am using a MagnetoSpeed chronograph which is reporting accurately in my opinion. I chronographed the Hornady Superformance factory ammo with 150 grain SST bullets through this gun and it reports the vendor advertised velocity of 3080 fps.

I do realize that 3200 fps is fast but that is what it does without any pressure signs ... so I will create another small test batch a see if it produces the same results.

I read that factory barrels can vary as much as 150 fps in the same rifle ... perhaps this is one of those guns at the higher end.

Works well for me with 56.5 and Hornady SST or Interlock. Either flat base or boat tail.
Around .75 MOA when the shooter is on a good day. Took a Mule deer to 400yds+ with this recipe. 57,5 grains, 165 SST, winchester brass and CCI primer. Around 0,050 to the lands.
