We're going to do be doing more long range 308 win shooting this summer. Nothing competitive. Just wondering what 308 bullets you might recommend as the best bang for the buck and a supplier with good inventory? (boxes of 1000+?)

We are currently sitting on these bulk packs from Hornady:

- 178gr BTHP - 1600 pcs item 30715B
- 168gr ELD-M - 1900 pcs item 30506B
- 155gr BTHP - 2000 pcs item 3039B
- 155gr with cannelure - 2000 pcs item 3039C

As a distributor, we do not sell to the public. If you contact your dealer, they can order from us.

Best and cheapest are somewhat mutually exclusive, but 155 gr Sierra Match Kings seemed to be the lowest price match grade bullet I could find in 308 and they sell them in boxes of 500. Last time I bought them, I bought them mail order. It might have been through Mystic Precision.

I like the 175 grain bullets, I like Sierra or ppu shot a few match loads with Sierra bullets, my SR-25 and xpr both are them like a hungry hungry hippo lol

To me, missing is very expensive.. so for my LR shooting and competition, I choose Sierra or Berger or Lapua depending on cal used.

For the 308, there are some awesome options from Sierra and Berger that allow accurate fire out to 1 mile... far enough for you?

PM or email.... quantities are entirely up to you

If you're not competing, I would by the Hornady products, i.e. their match bullets, ELD and AMAX bullets. IMHO, they can be as good in your rifle as Sierra's bullets are a lower cost. (flame suit on).

Probably the first question should be: What's the barrel twist? Next...what's "long range"?

Good questions to have answers to before you go spending $$$$ on the above recommendations.

thx for the follow up. I'm good to figure out weights and twist, load work up etc. I was just curious about brands i.e. if you want to plink with a few thousand of them what's a good economical option. We've got some Sierra and Hornady now we are going to try. Thx all.

What's msrp on the 178gr 1600 pack?

Let us know how you make out. This could be useful practical information for other shooters as well. Good luck.

I was thinking that aswell, I'm more interested in seeing how the matchc178 grain by hornady flies vs the 175 grain SMK, I'll have to get a box of each unless a generous soul has spares haha

Ya more in for on twist rate for the barrel and speed...and length of barrel ....1 in 10...1 in 12...etc...20” barrel...22” barrel etc etc
...I have a 1 in 12 twist in a 20” barrel ...the question is what weight of bullet should I play with

As far as I'm concerned if you want relatively economical .308 bullets for long range the Hornady 178gr ELDM and the Nosler 175gr RDF are the way to go. They both have a relatively good BC for .308 (.270 G7), much better than say the Hornady 178 BTHP or the Sierra 175 SMK. I've shot probably 6000+ of the 175 RDF in the past couple years and they perform great. I've made hits successfully out to 1500 yards ( in a match), they've just flat out consistently performed for me in 2 different barrels.

I shot 175gr class bullets cause that's what you are limited to in Tactical class in PRS and similar matches. If it wasn't for match use, I'd have a good look at the 185gr Berger Juggernauts.

What kind of prices are you paying for your bullets? I'm around 50 cents each to my door on the Sierra.

I also found some Nosler Custom HPBT 168gr 1000/box for $400 I may try those also.

I'd be loading up to 175gr and see what shoots. I'm currently loading 168's for my 12 twist and 11.25

Have a look here. Keep in mind Berger's tend to be longer bullets

Interesting to hear what people are shooting. I will take a look at some of the Berger bullets.

For me The "Go to " has been the 168 Hornady Match hpbt. They are about $95 for a 250 box, so quite reasonably priced. The other Bullet I like is the 155gr Lapua Scenar L. More money and powder but super flat and I can get 2850 fps out of my rifle.
