Im looking for a short handy .308 for elk/moose hunting this fall, I hunt in thick junk with alot of bear...I hunt solo and want a good rifle just incase a face to face with an angry sow. Any how.....never have been interested in mossberg but their scout rifle sure looks like a nice little rifle with a great sticker price. Anyone use this rifle for bush hunting? I dont really need a precision rig, Im fine with something that even does 1.5-2 MOA as shots are 100 yards max on big targets. Rugers have got my interest but at double the price Im not sure Id get double the performance. Any real world experience with these Mossbergs would be appreciated.

Cheers!!

No experience with Mossberg, but the CZ Range Rifle at a much higher price is a keeper. The Savage 110 scout looks great at at decent price point.

Just been browsing the "truck guns" In 308 and those two caught my eye.

I had one. Just sold it, but it wasn’t cause I didn’t like it. I needed to finance a new project. Mine was dependable and accurate. Easily 1.5 MOA with good ammo - probably could have got MOA with handloads, and a larger magnification scope. I was just using a Vortex scout scope, and although it’s a great combo for hunting, it’s not a precision setup.

I found mine to be a nice light, handy rig. It’s got a good recoil pad, so even though it’s light, it doesn’t beat you up. The ability to use P-Mags or M-14 mags is a nice bonus. Actually, as I type this I’m regretting selling mine more and more.

Over half the staff here are running a scout rifle in some form or another. The Mossberg is an excellent choice. They have a lot of great features like pillar bedding, 2 different mag choices in the same gun, lightning trigger, stiff 16" barrel... pretty hard to go wrong. Even though scout is expected to shoot 1.5-2 moa grouping we have found 3/4-1 moa is pretty average. We where out ringing a 6" gong past 300 yards this weekend.

We have 1 left at the moment with the Vortex scout scope already installed in viper rings.

I had a Mossberg scout type rifle in .223 that used AR15mags, the main reason I bought it. it was far more accurate than I thought it was going to be, and functioned reliably. Although I prefer my Ruger Scout that is housed in a Macmillan stock, it's also about 3 times the price of a Mossberg.

The Mossberg MVP Scout will be accurate enough for your purposes, 1.5 to 2 MOA with decent ammo is absolutely doable.

I find the barrel profile rather thick though. With a light stock it's VERY front heavy. I sold mine and went with a Ruger Scout because the barrel was lighter and the stock heavier - so the balance point wasn't so pushed out to the front as was the case with the Mossberg.

But if you're ok with a front heavy rifle, then the MVP Scout is a good choice otherwise

Scout platform is good for the intended purpose. Currently have the rifles in 223 and 308 with the 16” brl and full rail system. I use quick release rings on 308 and the peeps are great and accurate.

I like mine. The 16 inch bbl and the ability to use other common mags was a good selling point. The mag release is the only downer to the rifle.
