Gunsmith wanted

Hello all,

I skimmed through a few pages (ten years worth apparently) of the gunsmith sticky looking for someone in Manitoba. No dice. Figured I’d try a fresh post here.
I’m looking for a gunsmith in Manitoba. Preferably within an hour or three of Winnipeg. Need some work done on pistols and rifles alike. Hoping to find someone reliable to return to for the foreseeable future. Any name or number would be appreciated. I suppose if there are Manitobans here who use gunsmiths out of province I’d be interested in hearing that info as well.

Thanks in advance, and any information is much appreciated.

Adam, it sounds like you have a lot of work to do. That could be a real deterrent in your neck of the woods for any gunsmith because of work load and time constraints.

Google is your friend in a case such as this and if I were you, I would definitely be meeting face to face with any smith. I would want to see examples of his/her work and ability to get the job done in a timely manner.

In case you haven't noticed, gunsmiths tend to be getting long in the tooth as well as being inundated with work. Not that it pays all that well.

Most of the smiths I know have backlogs anywhere from three months up to a couple of years stacked in their safes, waiting to see the light of day. Big difference between mounting a scope and setting up a lathe or milling machine, if the smith even has one. Many smiths job out their lathe/milling work.

DO YOUR DUE DILIGENCE BEFORE CONSIGNING YOUR WORK TO ANYONE.

There are shops with good names and good references all across Canada but they won't come to you for the work. You will need to contact them. Nothing comes cheap or easy. Especially if you're looking for parts. Try getting a non prohib length barrel for a S&W revolver or pistol for instance. They're available but the last time I tried the S&W repair facility in Victoria would only sell rim fire replacement barrels. I was told that larger caliber barrels had to be installed by them, as per their contract with S&W.

Two good smiths in BC are Weber and Markin and Bits of Pieces. Yes, you have to ship but both are very well known and respectable establishments that can be trusted to get the work done properly and in an acceptable time frame.

Also, don't get the impression that you can drop off your firearms on a Friday afternoon and expect to pick them up the middle of next week. Just doesn't happen.

"Hey Jimmy! I'm just dropping off my sporter cause it's all mangled up. Can't even find the BCG on the dang thing anymore but at least you can see the action, or whats left of it.. Anyway, I gotta make a few stops and then get my double double fix. You'll have it ready by this evening, ya?"

Not a lot of work. A single piece of work. Looking for someone who I can return to possibly for other pieces of work. Yes I know google exists. Yes gunsmithing isn’t an afternoon appointment. Yes I realize I have to go to a business and they won’t come to me. Hence my inquest. I would prefer to meet face to face so folks in BC are great, and I’ll keep the information but again, I’m looking for someone local. I’ll rephrase and try again:

I’m looking for a Gunsmith in Manitoba to work on a sig pistol. Any information aside from generic reiterations or observations would be helpful. Thanks.

Lyle Linkaitis is in Selkirk (204) 785-2609. Lyle has done some excellent rifle work for me, but gunsmithing is a part time gig for him, so his turn around time isn't as quick as some others. His primary interest is in accuracy rifles, but it wouldn't hurt to ask him about working on your pistol.

For handgun work you can deal with confidence with Clarence Weatherby, owner of Bumble Bee Custom Machining in Prince George. Clarence has worked over 3 different handguns for me; the work was second to none, and the turn around time was quite reasonable.

Boomer;

Thanks very much. Turn around time is irrelevant as far as I'm concerned. Like anything, if I'm taking it to someone then I'm not concerned about the cost or turn over rate. I leave it up to the discretion of whomever I've left whatever in the hands of. Again, I appreciate the information.

The guy I've been going to for years is Kel, based out of Homewood a few mins East of Carman. Has his own lathe, stock duplicater, etc. Does very good work, can't remember if he handles restricteds or not, I've only brought him rifles and shotguns thus far.
Be prepared to lose 2,3,4 hours in his shop once you start talking guns or hunting stories. Lol. Super nice guy, tell him Matt sent you.

Kel-Lea Outdoors, website and Facebook.

RDP Gunsmithing out in Dugald does restricteds, if you can get him to amswer the phone, on a day when he's not too moody. Lol. Also does good work and reasonable rates, just a little rough around the edges.

And one in Winnipeg, Sheldon Stoller is also a gunsmith/dealer, mostly handles restricteds, a great source for parts among other things. He runs Firing Line gun club off Marion, his info is on their website and also goes by sstoller here on CGN, hope this helps you out.
