I read on a forum post on here that the US doesnt allow exports of 50 caliber or greater rifles. I have searched but haven't found any information backing that up. Does anybody know if it's possible to import say a bushmaster ba50 or barrett m99?

Why do you want to import one? Both of those firearms are already available in this country.
Warranty support is available if you use the right importer like IRUNGUNS or Az tech. cost to import is under 200.00 for either one of these companies
Only if you can have the firearm legally re-imported back into the US (they don't always allow them back) for support, and also if the manufacturer warranties said firearm, when they find out that it was brought into the country via grey-market, and not their designated distributor.
Both companies expressly say they that factory warranty will honored, and with one of the companies I have sent a rifle back to the US through them and factory warranty was honored with no problems and was a lot quicker than when I sent a rifle back for warranty to BC
When we say that there are no export issues with either rifle, that still requires that the the exporter in the US and the importer in Canada have the requisite permits for each country.
Short answer is that yes you can import them outside of a Canadian retailer who normally stocks them, but you will still need to use the services of a third party importer up here like IRG or others, and pay the required fees.
There’s no simple way for you or I to personally import for a handful of purchases. I’m assuming that the firearm you sent back to the manufacturer in the US had the process already set up for the shipment of the gun from Canada to them and back. That helps a lot but isn't always the case with every US company.
ITAR has made the process of cross border commerce related to firearms a lot more complex since 1997, but fortunately we have vendors up here willing to wade through all the red tape for us.
I wanted to send a pistol to a specific gunsmith in the US for a rebuild, but it required that he “import” my pistol via the state department. When I sent him the necessary US forms he declined to do the work, it’s a bit of a headache for sure.
