I wonder how practical 7.62x39 round is for hunting? And Rueger K-mini-30 particularly, how good of a shooter it is, accuracy and operation. Any input will be much appreciated.

Cheap offering of thousands of rounds in 7.62x39 - is it anything useful or is it all FMJ?

I had one and used the Remington green and yellow PSP in 125 grains. Worked very well, accuracy was so so to not so good though. Light and handy and knocked deer down like lightening. However shots were best kept well inside 100 yds. I sold it a few years after that and that guy still has it and he swears by it, still knocking deer down big time.
Surplus ammo would be out for hunting, and I really liked the Remmy factory stuff for deer.

Cheers,
Rick

Hi,

I had one of these rifle, they are short, light and lots of fun to shoot with pratically no recoil but accuracy was bad, nothing below 4"/100yds . My $250 Yugo SKS had better accuracy ;). Pass 100yds, forget it. I never used it for hunting but it should be good enough for deer as it's ballistic is very close to a 30-30win, Overall rating :runaway:.

I sold it after a couple of years. Although it was a fun rifle to shoot, I would not recommend it nor would I buy another one, I beleive there are better and more accurate rifle (in this category) for a lesser price, especially in the 7.62x39 caliber.

Good luck

from what i hear the 30-30 is actualy the one that is close to in preformance

mini 30's is an ok gun i have handeld one wasn't all that great and was used

for the same pricepossibly less a norc m14 could be had and i have heard that people are more satisfyed with them and they are even in 308 and will group minute of deer

Like some of the other replies, had one once, function was perfect but lacking in the accuracy department. Would probably do 3 1/2" at 100 yards which practically would get the job done but it's no bolt rifle.

Currently have one of the limited edition stainless Ruger Model 77 MkII bolt rifle's in 7.62x39mm. Haven't worked up a load for it as yet so I have no report as to it's accuracy. But I do know another guy that had one and he had had some very pleasing results using a 123 gr Hornandy bullet in his reloads.

I bought one off a member last year. Stainless model. I set a Burris FFII 1.75-5X20 on it. I shot two deer with it last year. 8 point and a 6 point. Fast follow up shots are easy as there is next to no recoil. I Love it. Shooting it at the range will cosistantly do 2.5" to 3" @ 100 M.
I had a Rem 7400 that jammed often. Got rid of it. The Ruger mini 30 is a reliable 100m and under deer calaber. It would not be my choice for anything bigger than deer, although I know a guy who uses his for moose.
All in all, a good dependable , thick cover bush gun for deer @ 100 meters and under. I hope this helps you! Tikka

I've read a lot about minis on this forum, most people tends to say they are cr@#, yet they all agree that they are reliable. I might still go for one, either the 7.62 or the new 6.8 so I could hunt deer with it, if it's close enough...

Practically, they generally have enough accuracy to get the job done, but let me just say most people find better choices.

For the same bullet 7.62x39 if you can find an SKS for 150 bucks and shoot it well, why spend more money on a not so good Ruger? Same ammo, works the same on the same game. I've hunted a lot with SKS, that 7.62x39 works just fine for me. No complaint.

For the load, mine is 26.5 gr of RL7 behind 123 gr Hornday or 125 Speer.

SKS is too heavy and awkward, not to mention UGLY.Yes I had one so I can have my opinion on them.

It's a combat rifle, what do you expect?

If it was awkward and heavy too you then you simply did not train/practice enough with it...a few months in the PLA circa 1960 to present day would have whipped you into shape real quick. :p

Would you also say the same about a UK army issue range rover?
On the battlefield "pretty" does not do the job.

And having said that it does what it was meant to do like no other rifle in it's class of semi auto milsurps. :)
Also I have no doubt that it would keep a family fed with game meat for generations, with of course the use of soft point ammo.

There must be something to the SKS craze... around these parts anyways... local shop has narry a one left now... guess I missed out again...

it bugs my ass to see people compare the 7.62x39 to the 30-30. Most OTC hunting ammo for the 7.62 is 123 or 124 gr thin jacketed soft points. This means alot of expansion and little penetration. The 30-30 is loaded with 150-170 gr roundnose hunting bullets. A little more thump at the short ranges these guns are for. And i have owned both, so i can have an opinion:D
