Bubba-ed gas port drilling job

Hi all, I received a bushmaster branded barrel recently and found that when looking down the gas port, it is apparent that whoever drilled the gas port, must have hit the other side of the barrel as well. The damage isn’t too bad but the diameter of the dimple on the other side is around 0.05”, right at where land meets groove. I’ve had T97 with this same dimpled gas port job and it shoots just fine

My question is, what are the effects on accuracy? Would this hole gather lead/jacket, or is it just too big and any leftover material would get blown out after every shot anyway?

That’s my initial thoughts as well since the gas port is also a hole. However the gas port allows material to escape, but the dimple is blind and might gather material. Am I over thinking this?

Yes you are overthinking this. If there was a hole drilled halfway through the other side of the barrel you may have reason for concern but since there is only a slight dimple it's not going to affect anything. There's no edges that are going to shred the jacket off the bullet as the dimple caused by the tip of the drill bit will be tapered. The dimple will most likely foul with copper and smooth itself out.

FYI, I have a barrel that was bumped by the drill bit opposite the gas port and have had zero issues.

I personally don't think expecting a properly machined barrel is overthinking anything.

If we don't hold manufacturers responsible for poor quality craftsmanship then parts that should have been culled will continue to flow to the dealers. Quality control should be handled in house, not by customers.

If it was a $800.00 custom barrel, I'd agree with you. A mass produced barrel, not so much. I won't affect anything in the end and is not even visible from the outside.

While I get your point that it isn't a big issue, I still think the issue never should have happened and should be dealt with(price is irrelevant imo).

The expense and hassle of dealing with poor quality control is one way to nudge companies to improve their QC. It is a matter of principle as well imo.

The guy running the mill/press that day had to know he hit the other side of the barrel. And really, have they not heard of a drill stop collar and caliper? If they can't drill a gas port properly(super easy mill work) it makes me wonder what else they are doing wrong.

Its a Bushmaster...

Hasn't done anything to improve NEA/BCL

Also, see post #10

NEA went out of business and BCL isn't far behind by the looks of it. Sometimes instead of fixing QC issues companies opt to keep pissing off customers until they no longer have any.

Yes, Bushmaster is not exactly Knight's Armament but, they aren't exactly bottom of the bucket either.

Isn't BCL just NEA renamed? Like Blackwater was renamed Xe by Eric Prince and then renamed again after he got the boot? To try to shake their #### reputation.

Confused now.

Also, there is a lot of people on American AR forums that think Bushmaster is BOTB.

BCL is a successor business, not just a renamed NEA.

As far as the divot in the rifling goes, it won't affect shooting. But it shouldn't be there in a new commercial barrel. Machine operator made an error. The barrel should have been rejected when inspected.

See above^

Most people in the US have never owned a Norc lol. Seriously though, Bushmaster used to make better firearms when it is was ran by the previous owners I hear.

Either way, poor QC. A 10 second look with a borescope would have sent it to a cull bin(at least by a reputable company).
