A 284 Winchester

Nice build. Glad to see you are having success in a SA. I am in the process of building a 284 or a improved version. Haven't decided yet. Long story but I had to build on a SA. My biggest concern is taking up to much case capacity, but my gunsmith thinks it will work OK with up to 160 gr bullets.

Just a bit of history on my Ruger 77 , its a factory flat bolt tang safety 1970 production plain barrel 284 Win . Bought in brand new way back in 1975 at Custom Gun Shop in Edmonton . The Leupold 4X has been on the rifle since day one , still hunt with this rifle every year . Go to load for the last 40+ years is 140 gr Nolser PT 56.0 grs IMR 4350 prints 3 shot group at 7/8' if my old eyes and trigger finger do there job . . I did a stock refinish on it many years ago , other than that is all factory original rifle .
 
Yes, beautiful Ruger. Love to find me one. Bought 6 boxes of 284 at a local show last weekend, don’t even own a 284 yet, the day will come....
 
Have found an early flat bolt 284 like the one above, but in the US. What is a fair price for one in excellent condition, maybe just some small handling marks. I understand the caliber and early flat bolt brings a bit of a premium. Heard the early tang safety 284s were good shooters.
 
In excellent condition a Ruger flatbolt like you described would likely be over 1500$ up here. Very uncommon, I know where one is hanging out but it’s not for sale :(

Another avenue to get your 284 win is to find a nice rifle in 7mm-08 and rechamber it.

Thanks! Yeah, I know of one or two up here, but they can’t be bought. He one I found in the US is $1500US. Would be a far chunk more than that time I got it here. But, may just do it. I am a bit of a purist, so would like an original. Wanna play, gotta pay, sometimes.
 
Thanks. I’d like to run a 143 or 155 Hammer Hunter. Just can’t decide which one to buy. Will have to import them as they don’t have a Canadian dealer. Will a 284 built on a SA with a Wyatt extended box shoot a 155 at 3000 fps out of a 24” barrel? Seems like it should be close.

You'd be pushing it over SAAMI pressure limits but not by much. Essentially, the 284 does everything a. 270 will. I pushed 150gr Btips to 2950 with 58gr of H4831 and they groups well with a low ES.
 
Thanks for the info. I’m hoping R26 works and should get me more velocity. But accuracy trumps speed so we will see.
