I've started noticing (in Southern Alberta at least) that there is a huge discrepancy in ammo prices for handguns.

At Pro Line Shooters in Calgary, I can get .45 auto Fiochi JHP 230 gr. boxes of 50 for $22. Not a bad price for what they are and the target practice I intend on using them for. They also have / had Sellier and Belliot .40 SW FMJ for $16 or so. They are comparable with Wholesale sports in terms of price.

Now, with that being said, on my most recent trip to The Shooting Edge, I was just going to purchase some of the Winclean that they have abundantly there until I found out that they wanted $35 a friggin' box.

$35 for a box of .45 auto Winclean!

I was also most recently in Edmonton at P&D, Phoenix, Milarm and Wide West Shooting Center in West Edmonton mall.

.45 Auto Winclean @ Wild West Shooting = $24 NOT $35 like at TSE
.45 Auto Black Hills FMJ @ Milarm = $37 box!
.45 Auto Sellier & Belliot 230 gr FMJ @ Phoenix = $32 box! $16 MORE than the same damn thing in .40 SW in Calgary.

.45 Auto Speer Gold Dot +P 180 gr HP @ P&D = $35 box. Yep, thats right, you can get a premium +P HP for $2 cheaper (per 50) at P&D than regular 230 gr FMJs at Milarm.

You can also get, as I mentioned before, .45 auto Fiochi's for $15 less in Calgary than a sub-standard .45 munition (as far as I'm concerned) at Phoenix in Edmonton.

(I am not affiliated with any of the companies at all).

Has anybody else noticed this? Why is there such discrepancy's?

It may have to do with when they were purchased from the dist. and how much they cost at that level.....Ammo is going up in price so fast that if you bought it a few months ago the price will be much lower than if bought today(I'm talking about at the wholesale to retail level).

It's all about supply and demand.
"...the same damn thing in .40 SW..." It isn't the same thing even though it's from the same manufacturer. The demand for .40 S&W isn't the same as it is for any make of .45 ACP. In any case, jacketed bullet ammo is expensive everywhere.

I believe that .45 winclean is $58 at our local outdoors store (only local large-scale shop that does guns). My CCI Maxi .22wmr is 15 bucks a box, I only go there to support the local biz (cuz it's 10.99 at every other crappy tire).

ammo prices are going up all most as fast as housing prices in Vancouver

I notice canadianBDX bullet and combat masters ammo prices have not gone "through the roof" like everywhere else.

Maybe he doesn't understand global marketing yet......;):D

Copper and lead are hardly "precious". Do the math on the price of the metals in a box of ammo. It might surprise you......

50 x 180g bullets = 1.285lbs of lead (assuming pure lead bullet)

lead @ $1.40/lb = $1.80 in a box of 50 180g

Say we use jacketed ammo. 7% (avg) of a bullets weight is the jacket. So that will be about 12g per jacket on a 180g bullet.

12g jacket x 50 rounds = 600g or .085lbs

copper @ $3.50 / lb x .085lbs = $0.30

Average metals cost in a box of 50 180g jacketed bullets = $2.10

Yeah, but Joe, as I understand it, BDX has a three month back order list as of a couple weeks ago.

So his prices are likely 3 months behind the times at best.

:bsFlag:I just picked up 14,000 on the way back from Nationals.:D

Price of copper is going up. And the two wars going on are soaking up a lot of the supply.

More :bsFlag:! The last few weeks have shown a downward trend. Something to do with supply vs. demand....

well if there's one thing i learned quick is that shop's really dont like when other's under cut there ammo prices and you mention it to them....

i can buy 5 boxes of igman .303 here for $15ea =$75 plus tax or i can drive 6hr's and pay $65 tax inc for the same product so i mentioned it to the shop owner.... needless to say his rational was that the "other shop" must have needed to get rid of it in a bad way because that's less then wholesale...

the shop that buy's the most pay's the least in the end and can pass on the saving's to you.

Is that right Joe?

Is that right?

Well, maybe BDX likes you Joe. Maybe they love you.

The long and the short of it is that regardless of when you were able to get your ammo, I was quoted 3 months back order.

So don't call BS on me you little SOB.

Cram it sideways pal.

I called bulls**t on his prices being behind 3 months. I paid exactly what he has listed on his website, which has not gone up 40% like many others claim. I didn't say you were not quoted a 3 month back order.

Hmmmm. Wonder why BDX doesn't love YOU?

Little? Why thank you for the compliment!:p
