Those 50's examples I can look at and they will cycle almost by themselves
Yes a model 12 is smooth but so are some used wingmasters
Not sure what you have for a repo other than that grade 5 28ga but I have a full set of grade 1 and none of those cycle like an original model 12 IMO in fact both the 20ga and 28ga I had to modify to get the rounds feeding right into the chamber especially the 28 ga. The 20ga would dump rounds on the ground She was a single shot for some time :(

I've had both the grade 1 and grade 5 repro's both in 20 & 28 at one time or another plus a few of the DU 20's and have never had an issue with one. All worked superb and every one you could stand on end, push the slide release and the pump handle would slide down almost 75% of the pump stroke under it's own weight. I think they are wonderful guns though I have to admit I no longer own any, I sold the last one(28 grade 5) last week to invest in an older mint MX8 w/colour case receiver....:)

It was both a common problem with them the issues I mention. Google issues and I am sure one will see I was not the only one with these problems. My second 28ga was fine
My MX8 days are well behind me. :( Please share pics when you get it

They're a thing of magical beauty.
I have an old one (2&3/4") Fixed full choke w/30" barrel.
Nevermind the extremely rugged yet smooth action...It's killed more than the plague!!

By that time you have no hair left :) To fix a new trigger or a rebuild needs to be fitted which is not something may can do right today IMO including gunsmiths

I've not had to mess with the trigger itself on one yet. But I had to hand fit the action release bar on one of them. It was an aftermarket deal and required some real patient filing and assemble, check, disassemble, retouch, assemble lol

And yes shell feed timing would be a PIA to work on lol the mechanism is simple (lifter actuated as the bolt moves forward and forces the rear of the feed lever down) but would be brutal to tinker with assemble dissassemble tinker for sure.
That's half the fun though ;)

Just as the Express line was coming out, they were already making the Special Purpose 870. It's basically a WM with a fine matte finish and a very nice gun indeed. The SP was dropped from the line in favour of the Express to reduce product duplication.

I have one here with 3" chamber and rare 26" bbl. Original synthetic stock was swapped out for a walnut police stock making a very nice upgrade and pkg overall.
 
Yep, I've got an express I bought 20ish years ago, which after many thousands of rounds, is as smooth as a new wing master. I've also got a 70s wing master that will cycle if you look at it and think seriously about pumping itm
 
I have to admit I am a bit of a Wingmaster junkie. I am running a 53 Wing, that has been redone to death. It started out as my fathers spare gun, and lived in the bottom of a canoe. It was mine when I turned 15, that was not yesterday. Since then, I have replaced the barrel with a 3" Express barrel, had the ejector change for a 3" version, had it Parkerized in 97, and Cerkoted a few years ago. It has seen old wood, that rotted off from the salt water, fibreglass, black synthetic, and now back to wood. It is by far my go to . Second is the Sportsman 12, poor mans version of the 870, DOM 86. They were only made for three years. Lastly is the 20 ga, small frame, DOM 89. Took me long time to find one. As all others have stated, all smooth as butter and a dream to shoot. My last wish list is for the Waterfowl version that I have only seen once, and still can't find.

I am a junkie big time also :) and have quite a few in all gauges LOL

Are you talking the early 80's 20ga ducks unlimited with the 21 or 23 inch barrel ( I cannot remember) and IC choke
I have mine new but no box and yes after all these years I kept it I am going to shoot it finally after discovering DU guns are not worth more than regular ones

I’ve got my dads 50s wingmaster, it’s traveled the country from James Bay for geese to Alberta for Pheasants,dad got around. My first shotgun was a Wingmaster 20 Lw and my most recent purchase is a 28 gauge, you never know what you’ll find in EE

3Macs: Nope not the one. It was a full sized Wing. It was green in colour, matte finish, plain jane walnut wood, no checkering, came with a Camo sling. I am guessing around late 80's. I say one in a marsh in NB, never seen another.

And you are sure it was factory??
I don't remember any green matte wingmasters being offered but have every 80's original catalog so when I get some time will look
Green SPS there was but they had short barrels I think. I have one with the green camo

Found it. Not sure where I got the green colour from, it was a long time ago.

"In 1985 Remington introduced the Model 870 SP Special Purpose Magnum gun with 26-inch or 30-inch, full choke, vent rib barrel, a no-sheen, satin finish on exposed metal parts, and a subdued oil finished hardwood stock. This gun was designed for waterfowling and turkey shooting" The SPs came with a Woodland camo sling and fittings installed And the finish really was Parkerized up until 1989 I know."
 
I've always done well with the 870 for trap shooting, 3 gun shoots & hunting. They are just so dang adaptable for each discipline & super supported by a beauty aftermarket selection. Me favorite pump gun fer sure.:)
 
I purchased a 1974 production Wingmaster in great condition from prairie gun trader.. the action is so satisfyingly smooth.

as Zeegler said, smooth as silk.

Its a real thing of beauty.
