So, does anyone know good places to find them ( Besides every now and then on the EE) ?

Ive recently bought one (its in .308) and would like to pick up more mags, Now Im curious because they look just about the same as my SG542 mags , I haven't had a chance yet but Im hoping they might work (with some playing around) Has anyone else tried something similar ? Or am I stuck to a life of hunting that finnish steel ?

Gotcha. Gonna be like $350+ per. I recall seeing a some at Kelly's Online once, might be worthwhile to send them an email. IRG is your next best bet.

SG542 mags will not work; at least I've not heard of anyone being successful converting them. G3/HK91 mags will work, but needs modification involving some filing/grinding and attaching a lip/catch so it sits in the receiver once inserted. I've never done it before, but did sell like 5 of em to someone here for next to free. Believe he's got access to a metal shop too. Otherwise, G3 mags usually available through Collector's Source.

Last alternative would be Galil mags, but they be just as rare as oem Valmets.

I had Williams Arms order a spare from Stoeger Canada as they where the Valmet importer at the time for a M78 hunter 30-06 I had at one time and it was about $300 bucks and took several months to come in. Stoeger will not let you order it yourself from them and you have to go through a dealer that deals with them. —-Dieseldog!
 
That's why I sold my .308 Valmet. I had 2 mags for it and that's it. The mags for it are stupidly over priced. That's why the 7.62X39 is the better choice. It just takes AK mags. I'm a lady in waiting for a 5.56mm Valmet. I have been buying mags for one if one pops up for sale.
 
Ah, the ridiculous, seldom realized beforehand, logistical supply problems of jumping into the Canadian Unicorn guns pool.....
Oddball, rare, stupid overpriced and highly sought after are the inseparable 4 corners of that square.

I personally prefer mass produced, widely available, flooded market firearms for this exact reason :rockOn:
The kind of guns where its just as cheap, possible and easy to buy a whole new rifle instead of replacing 4 parts ala SKS, M14, Rem 597, Norc AR's etc ;)

$300+ for a ####ing magazine (which are still barely available) is pushing past the borders of sanity and into the fog of stupid/madness lol

Galil mags are easy to get
 
IRG was working on a project for .308 m78 mags. You could check in with them. I have a few .308’s and barely more than 1 mag for each. IMO these guns are safe queens, not run and gun tools. I might shoot each of mine once a year. Parts aren’t common, especially for the .308’s, and these are only going to appreciate. They’re already highly collectable stateside, and given their ak-exempt status up here they’re worth even more. It’s nice to have spare mags for sure, but for a gun that I’m only going to put a handful of rounds through on an annual basis, I’m really not worried. The valmet produced mags are good quality. You’re far more likely to break a firing pin than wear out a mag. I would say congrats on your purchase, enjoy your rifle, and don’t stress about getting a bunch of extra mags.
 
I’m fortunate to have half doz m78 mags and half doz m76/88 mags.....

I will admit it took real effort to acquire these mags....

I don’t envy someone trying to locate or purchase valmet mags.

Aftermarket mags are inconsistent and problematic for these guns....

Invest in the original mags and you will recoup your costs in the end....

Also.... take care of them....
