I want to shoot a different caliber, looking for a NR "Ar style" platform, budget is around 1k.

I got hyped about the WK but am very weary about all the issues and premature wear.

Read mostly great things about gen2+ Jr's except for laborious takedown. Could always buy quick release.

Mostly shoot indoors these days, looking for something new for fun and plinking.

Opinions?

JR fursure hands down, if be very weary of the WK, I had 2 of them and both were a POS

Why not look at the FX9?

I want to buy one myself, but haven't had the chance to handle/shoot one

I'm leaning toward the Jr.
Been stockpiling cabelas gift cards for ages and they are both available at the abby store right now so it's a toss up between the two

I have a WK, no issues. Goes bang every time and no signs of atypical wear. I would recommend it. It definitely scratched that non-restricted AR-style itch for me. Also, is caliber an important factor? You might find the 9mm sorta "tame" (for want of a better term).

Premature wear on wk was from magnet charging handle all new wk come with threaded handles which do not cause any of the mentioned wear I really like my wk now that I have the threaded handle (magnetic handle was my only complaint) more accurate then I thought no ftf or fte goes bang evertime.
Do not like the e clip on take down pin but ya can pick up a threaded take down pin from rwa for like 20 bucks?

I almost got a WK but I cancelled my order the day they finally called me after 1 year of my preorder. I am still interested in their 7.62x39 version but the lady at Wolverine told me I couldn't just change my preorder to that since they don't offer preorder yet for 7.62x39 version. I do have a JRC 9mm I would say I really love shooting that gun. Cleaning is a chore but cleaning an AR bolt is about the same. OP I really think it depends on if you have any 223 semi rifle. Since I got a T97 gen2 and a few AR the 18.5 WK doesn't really stand out for me too much. Have that said I think the WK is an awesome gun.

If you end up getting the JRC I am not sure they now come with the easy take down setup in the buffer tube. If not I really suggest you get the upgrade and replace it. JRC is very nice to deal with. Also .. my JRC doesn't like the TriggerTech TT15 trigger it short stroke like hell with it but Timney trigger had no issue at all.

Where are you shooting Bush or the range ?
What do you want to shoot 9mm or .223 ?
Do you have glock mags or Stanag mags or .223 pistol mags ?

I have an earlier WK, magnetic handle, had a crooked hand guard due to the gas block being crooked, and didnt eject. Sent it back to kodiak and they fixed it. still need to send the bolt back due to recall. I'm still sour about how they are making people pay for an "upgraded" threaded handle bolt. Everyone should have gotten sent a new bolt that was chewing apart receivers. Some people haven't had problems with the magnetic handle and some people had loose fitting bolt handles that chewed apart the receiver.

End of the day I love the rifle and glad I bought. It's nice to be able to have a non restricted updated AR-180 that takes AR mags, pistol grip, buttstock, some forends, triggers. The top rail is nice but can't fit certain optics. And the m-lok is the way to go.

The JR ? Mehh. Needing tools to take it down and the look of them doesn't do it for me.

For me it was the FX9 preorder or WK. The Ruger PCC was up there too.

I wanted to shoot .223/5.56 in the Bush and stock up on AR mags and bulk ammo.

I want a PCC that takes glock mags. One day...

I don't own nor have I shot anything in 9mm or 5.56
Been shooting 7.62x39 and shotguns so anything new will have that novelty initially.

I'm glad to hear that the current rifles coming from kodiak have addressed the bolt carrier and receiver wear, makes me more interested.

Haven't shot in the Bush since they did the target shooting "ban" on all the closest crown land roads.

been going to a 25m indoor range closer to my place since.

I have both of them, but my JRC is in 40 S&W. I haven't shot the WK much yet, but enough that I upgraded the trigger. On the JR I replaced the original quad rail hand guard with a low profile M-lok guard (the original was uncomfortably fat). The only negative point on the JR is no last round bolt hold open, but 9mm ammo is less expensive than .223 . They are both a lot of fun, handle them both and then decide.

Yea, ammo cost is a consideration but I don't get out shooting much so 20cents a pull vs 50 doesn't add up as quick for me. I feel like I'd have more fun with .223 though

Id say go with a Pistol Caliber Carbine (PCC), especially for indoor use. With a PCC ull be less likely to run into range restrictions, ammo will be cheaper and you and your neighbors in the bays next to you will be far less annoyed by the concussion and sound of the gun firing then that of a .223. The PCC will still be fun, in fact I find most PCCs have more felt recoil and muzzle jump then the semi auto .223's ...

AS for deciding which PCC , that is always a hard one.

Definitely take a look at:

The CX4 : a good blend of everything people look for in a PCC. IF you can get past its looks!

The Ruger 9mm Carbine : a less "tactically shaped" blend of everything people look for in a PCC

The FX9 : fairly new to the Canadian market, still hard to find in stock I believe.... Basically a tactically improved version of a Just Right Carbine (JRC). HOWEVER, they seem to be slightly less accurate then the JRC, and still appear to be less reliable then the gen 2 JRC as well. But most seem VERY happy with there FX9s!

The Just Right Carbine (JRC) : It really lives up to its name. Super reliable, super accurate, very customizable and excellent service and shipping from the manufacturer. The quick detach buffer tube system is a MUST! totally eliminates the disassembly complaint. Some models come with it now, mine didnt so i had to buy mine from JRCs website. Other cons would be the relativity high price compared to competition and unless u buy the take down model, the gun is pretty much the size and weight of a AR 15. Which can be an advantage and disadvantage depending on the situation.

I don't have the wk, so can't speak to it. I do have the Jr in 9mm and it hasn't missed a range trip since I got it. It's a blast to have something so affordable to shoot. Plus it's friendly enough (pretty quiet, low recoil) for friends and family to shoot as an intro rifle.

I love my new JR for cheap range plinking. Cant go wrong with 9mm. I usually shoot at 50 or 100m at an 8" plate. Just enough snap with the recoil to keep it fun. Not overly concerned with accuracy. Hitting the plate is good enough for me. It's been perfectly reliable with my magpul pmags.

It took a bit too much cash to achieve this configuration and I'll never get it back lol but I dig it.

WK for me hands down. I'd almost never take a PCC over a proper intermediate cartridge. Both are of comparable build quality and a new production WK shouldn't have any issues. Keep in mind the JR had a pretty ####ty reputation until they smoothed out the design.

WK 180 for sure. But mine is solid and shoots really well. Im sure I may have a different opinion if it wasn't so awesome!! To be fair I did have to have the BCG replaced, mine was one that actually failed but the company took care of me real quick and I even got a bonus Tshirt.

Cheers!!

I tried a JR Carbine a few years ago because I thought I really wanted one. I was really uninspired by it and didn't buy one.

I have a WK and I like it a lot. I had the magnetic bolt which was upgraded to the screw in. The screw in is a much better design. A few guys are selling brass defectors for them and that's a cheap upgrade I'd recommend. The only thing with the WK is that it can be finicky using pistol mags. I have a few pistol mags and one of them the WK doesn't like - failure on round 5 every time. With the other mags it's close to 100% reliable. With the supplied HERA mags...again almost 100% reliable.

My vote....go WK.
