I've eaten many of the different freeze-dried backpack meals over the years. Every company makes some gooders, and some that aren't fit for man or beast, IMO.
Now that my two teenage sons are avid hunters and often join me, the cost of freeze-dried meals for 3 is a factor. So we mix up our menu more and pack maybe one MH per day- usually for a hot supper.
Oatmeal for breakfast is a standard. Added protein powder or milk powder, a mixture of nuts, seeds and dried fruit. I pack it in a ziplock sandwich bag. Add hot water, let sit, bite off a corner and shotgun it straight from the bag. (I hate doing dishes on the mountain and water supply is often a problem here.)
Mostly dine cold during the day, especially during hunting season. Homemade venison jerky, homemade protein bars, dried fish, seeds/nuts, trail mix, Clif bars, butthole sandwiches, etc. serve as lunch/trail food during the day.
And usually a freeze-dried meal of some kind for supper. I like to add chilli pepper flakes and olive oil, for flavour and calories. The dried butter idea is an interesting one.
