Hey CGN,

While it seems like years but I am finally almost done my SLR build. This took even longer then it needed because work took me out of country for some time. I jumped on the first day pre-order for this set because I always dreamed of having my "longer ranger" AR style rifle to shoot at my local spot. I sold off all my AR-15s and 10's because there was just no local range that would allow me to shoot the 500m + that I can go to on my time off.

Anyway, Thanks to Calgary Shooting Center in working with me while away so I didn't loose my place in line for this receiver set.

So I had it sent to my local Smith, Valley Guns, in order to assemble the rifle. Usually I will do the work all myself but time frame didn't allow for this and I trust them to work on my rifles!

So here she is;

So I didn't have much planned for this rifle, other then shooting 500m+. For this I went with a CNA 20inch 1-9 twist 223 Wylde Heavy Barrel. Yes I know why that twist rate? It was cheap, and I didn't fully know what route I was going or even if I was going to keep the rifle.

Lower parts kit is standard DPMS. I went with the A1 stock because I had it lying around and I actually rather like the looks. Infact it makes me almost want to lean towards a Mk12 style rifle.

For optics I went with the Vortex Diamondback Tactical 4-16FFP Mil/Mil. I went this route because I couldn't believe the features for the cost. Lets give it a shot.

Over all I am impressed with fit form and finish of this rifle. Being out of the country for so long I have been oblivious to the issues and concerns persons have had in regards to these receivers. Though I am reading up here alot, and will try to give an honest opinion once I get rounds down range.

Still looking for a muzzle device, thinking of going the MK12 Clone route might start looking at that and either a PRI or KAC rail instead. Probably look used for this.

I know the big question other then how does it shoot, the cost. With mostly new parts, I am sitting at $2563.69 with the Vortex optics on it. Basically as you see it in the picture. This actually impressed me as I was expecting alot more. I know I am already talking about spending more, but I didn't know what direction I was going I just wanted a shooter. We will see if it shoots soon enough.

I'll keep you all updated as things go.

So I think this is becoming the Ugly Mac, ie the title change

Tan stock and grip, black receiver set scope and rail, stainless barrel, green IMI mags, brown sling, and light green forward grip.

Well have no fear the forward grip is going. Its too big, but I had it for a C7 clone build. Going to get a stubby Magpul or something short like that. Thinking on going keymod instead of the railed version to save that little bit of height. I do like the grip for off hand shooting while a bi-pod is attached, it feels steady with the weight forward. Why I tried it with the Cadex I had before looking for one.

I had some P-Mags, though they do function with dummy rnds, they do not fit well in the housing. I checked out Valley Guns to see what they had. He let me try some IMI and steelies. Funny the IMI actually seated, and dropped free from the mag well better then the stealies. So I bought 5 IMI. All drop, fit and cycle dummy ammo. I choose green as I had every other color, and everyone else keeps telling me to go green, so may as well start with my mags!

I still have yet to fire it, or get a muzzle devices. This Sunday its supposed to be only -6C, looks like a good day to try it out.

Any suggestions for muzzle device? May just go thread protector for now.

Start with a thread protector if you are unsure of what you want to screw on the business end, I'm sitting here looking at TNA's Muzzle Device section trying to decide if I'm going burlap sack cheap, or spending that extra $12 for the one with the flats...with my hands better go with the flats. My purpose is to see if the barrel will shoot better without the bird cage, or brake hanging off the end. You can get one of those caps to match your barrel for under $20. Then take your time figuring out what you want. That, or a plain Bird Cage, I keep going back to that as the blast from the brake annoys now and then.

With your twist rate 55 gr to 69 gr. 77/75 gr will probably shoot well except on really cold days. 68 gr Hornady's and 62 gr FMJBT's prob won't shoot on a day like today, maybe not at all as they really need a 1 in 8 or faster at our elevation/average temps (-22 at Valley Guns according to the weather network...well Pet anyway). How is Jeff these days?

I'm pretty sure Jeff is good, hard to tell under that stash of his!! Haha

Ya, I'm not a muzzle devices guy, even my boomers don't where them. If the recoil is that much I need one, then there's probably another round I could be shooting! That's my opinion on that.

This had the threaded muzzle, and well don't black rifles need something there for the look? Haha. I have been browsing that TNA sight hard. Where the barrel came from actually.

As for Ammo; I have 5.56 62gr factory to test function and see what it does to brass. I also have some75gr Hornady's factory kicking around after my IUR testing. As for twist, weight and such I have everything from 39gr BLITZKING - 80gr ELD on the reloading bench to work something out of this rifle/barrel combo once work/weather come together. Besides work has me moving in the next two months so might just wait till I'm at my new location to play with loads for those atmospherics.

So I've now moved across the country and have yet to fire this baby.

Though..... I have added some more stuff.IMG_20190813_1728572 by DJ Bay, on Flickr

So I ordered a PRI hand guard, flip up front sight..... Guess only thing I'm missing is the mk12 muzzle device.

Oh ya and I have two scope options at this time. The 2.5x10x42 Nightforce as seen above or the 2.5X10x24 mildot you see below:

That being the more traditional Mk12 option when the Leopold is not present.

I would need to find the right rings to mount the x24 a little higher, but to be honest I love the x42 on there. Don't know what route to go at this time.... And well still haven't even shot it so hard pressed to say. The PRI has gave it a bit lighter feel, don't think it dropped much in weight though.

So if anyone has leeds on the muzzle device, rings or maybe the arms flip up sight let me know.
