Ingesting lead....

I found a couple pieces of lead in some ground venison from last year. I've eaten quite a bit of it so I assume I've ingested some. :puke: The lead must be from when I put a finishing shot into the neck at close range...the bullet must have fragmented badly.

I've heard of this happening w/ lead pellets but not deer meat. Anybody else have this happen? I don't know if I should blame the processor or what (no, it wasn't me ;) ). Anyway, guess I should toss the rest of the ground meat/sausage...should I get my lead level tested? :confused: Thanks for any feedback!
 
It takes a great deal of exposure to lead to cause any serious health issues. Not so much in kids though. However, if you're in the least worried, pitch the rest of it.
 
I guess we've all been taught to be so much more cautious about lead these days, but I have to say that all the lead shot that's been accidentally swallowed from game birds over the years didn't seem to have any acute toxic effect. Not a good idea for children as they are more succeptible to it, but I wouldn't throw out the meat, if it were me. If there are any more chunks, you'll likely find them and spit them out.
 
I'm not sure what to think about the health risks w/ all the information and misinformation out there. I'm more concerned w/ others who could be exposed like my Gram or nieces. And if it's not safe enough for them then maybe I shouldn't be shoveling it down either.

Also, w/ the size of the particles and "chunks", it wouldn't be reasonable to assume they'll be found.

Unless you have a gizzard, you'll probably just "pass" any lead pieces you may have swallowed. Lead shot is toxic for birds but steel shot is hard on human teeth!
 
When we were Kids we used to chew on lead pellets till the end was turned into a spitzer style.........they went further through the squirrels:redface:

Now I look back at how many thousands of pellets I must have chewed on, it hasn't affected me one bit..........:onCrack:
 
Lead is bad for kids in smaller doses than adults. Lead is rarely fatally toxic, but does cause many problems such as learning disorders in children. The lead you eat in your bit of wild game overa life time is far less toxic than the mercury you would get from canned tuna over a lifetime.
 
This thread reminds me of a certain board member who used to carry his lead pellets for his pea shooter in his lower lip. I guess in his mind sucking on lead was better than chewing on a wad of chewing tobacco :onCrack: :D.

And yes, he is now short a few bricks...
 
Actually, the toxicity of ingested lead shot in waterfowl has been widely documented and well proven !

Common sense and/or a good basis derived from scientific study rarely has anything to do with government regulation however !
