So I just came back from the toughest hunt of my life. I’m not new to goat hunting but this trip pushed me to my limits. It started with a tough 6 hour climb to reach the tree line. With in 30 mins I spotted a goat perched far above me on a rock face. It took another 3.5 hrs to round the backside of a mountain peak to get into range. I know my limits of shooting and my 30-06 with 180gr pills is 450 yards absolute max. So as I close up to 470 I pull the spotter out for one last look. Everything is going as planned. I get up to 410 yards with no cover between us now. I crank the leupold right up to 16 power. The first shot is a clean miss and the goat trots about 10 yards then stops. I hold a little higher and aim for the neck. At the shot the goat let’s go and tumbles end over end down the mountain. It took another 1.5 hrs to reach the goat and another 1 hour to cape and bone it out. I had to spend the night in my rain gear on the shale slope. It took the next 2 days to get the goat and all my gear down the hill. Longest shot of my life and one I won’t soon forget. the punishment of carrying everything down on my back still has my legs hurting. The goat ended up being a nanny with rather billyish horns.... unfortunately. Honestly I was sure it was a billy, but this is hunting in the real world and that just how it can go. My second goat ever. Couldn’t be happier.

Good stuff-

now shooting that Nanny, what does this mean for Your future hunts ?

ive read somewhere, shooting a nanny excludes you for 10 years? incorrect?

Great adventure and memories to recall for years to come!
My second goat was a nanny similar to your situation. Putting her horns next to the billy from the year before showed the exact same curvature and weight carried from bases to tips, except for being smaller and shorter (9 1/4" vs 10 1/2"). She was alone and higher on the mountain than the other goats, and had good chaps and beard. Had me fooled, even at 110 yards. So can relate to the mistaken gender identification. Never had the opportunity to watch her urinate, which would have been a good indicator.
Just be careful, goat hunting is addictive!
My goal is to get one with my recurve.

Congrats! Great story and pics. I love hunts that require a lot of work. The hard work makes the success all the more sweeter.

I would love to do a goat hunt some day but probably won't happen. Not a lot of goats in SK.

Depending on the area of B.C. the shooting of a nanny could restrict the amount of tags giving out next year if it
was in a LEH area, if it is in a open area and to many nannys are taken it could have it changed to a LEH area.
There also has been some regulations changed in the past because of female goat harvest.
It is kind of similar to when grizzlys were open in B.C. and if to many sows were taken in certain areas.
