I just finished having a close look at the 1896 m91 I recieved from weimajack. A wooden crossbolt has beeen fitted, never cut for sling slots but it has a 1908 up rear sight, all the numbered parts match(even the stock is dated 1896), it has taken a severe beating in the field & at some point in the past it had wire sling swivels it the fore stock & a post swivel in the rear(gone now). Anybody care to guess where this puppy spent time in the early 20th? BTW some careless individual stamped a bear into the barrel. Now if I can only find a bolt to match. Anybody got tula bolt #18778 out there?

If I had to guess, with the wire swivels I would say Spain. Not sure by what you mean by a bear stamp.

The barrel is likely Austrian. Berndorfer.

Yeah, most common bear is Austrian. Likely a ww1 captured rifle, recaptured by the Soviets at some point and then later sent to the Communist forces during the Spanish Civil War in the 30's by Stalin.

- Because it does not have Finnish markings and since most M91's in Canada were imported from Finland.

- Except for a small number imported from Spain in the early 60's, also wire swivel was a common modification done by Spain to use spanish mauser slings.

And also, the batch of rifles that this one was sold with also included a number of other Mosins that were definitely of spanish origin. One had a spanish made M91/30 replacement handguard, another had a spanish cleaning rod and another was marked "made in the USSR" which are all traits of the 1960's Interarms imports of Spanish used Mosins. Also, most of the rifles in that batch had wire sling swivels.
