450 marlin or 45-70 govt'??

Hi guys,
Im the proud owner of the marlin 1895 45-70 and loving it for hunting moose and black bear here in nfld.
Question is a friend of mine is interested in buying the marlin 450 mag. I think he will be better off with the 45-70 ? With the 45-70 you got both rifles , and what do you think of how popular is the 450 marlin , what about down the road say 10-15 years will the 450 marlin be like the winny 307 and 356 you will have to remorgage your house just to buy ammo?

Anyway, if you MUST buy ammo, then the 450 marlin has a lot more steam than factory loaded 45-70. Both are stupidly overpriced. The 45-70 benefits a lot more from handloading than the 450 does.

This topic comes up every now and then, do a search and I'm sure you'll find tons of opinions

I've got both and the 45-70 has way more reloading options and there is wider range and more factory ammunition available for the 45-70. I've taken numerous bear with the 45-70 (last one weighed 565 pounds) and it is great on moose. I don't know if the 450 will stay around for the long haul. I just know that when I go to the safe my hand reaches for my Marlin 1895ss almost every time and I have to remind myself that I also have a Marlin 450;)
 
as far as the 450 goes, I believe it will stick around unless 45-70 +p loading become a lot more common (which I doubt due to liability concerns). Look at the 444 marlin - it's survived since the 60's
 
My bit of research, talking to people and reading material swayed me to the .444 Marlin. Ample power with tolerable recoil. :)

And yeah, "buying" ammo is become a stranger concept all the time, especially with the recent price increases.
 
If he opts for the .450, tell him to buy at least 100(or more) empty cases too. It'll mean he can reload if Marlin's marketing types decide to discontinue the cartridge.

they still make SAUM brass....


I own a .450 and I have no worries about brass supply. winchester, browning, Marlin, sisk.... all chamber rifles in .450Marlin
 
hell, they still make 348 brass, 307/356 brass, 284 brass, and all sorts of long dead stuff. Don't worry about component availability in the unlikely event the cartridge is discontinued any time soon
 
Would anyone here use either of these cartridges for BEAR DEFENSE? Would they be good enough?

I think it would do O.K. but I would have to top it with a 32x mildot tactical scope.:rockOn:
