Buying a new pump this week and am wondering what are the pros. and cons. of each barrel, any and all opinions welcome, thanx.

Modern powders have eliminated any velocity gain you would see from a longer barrel. The only reason for a longer barrel now is how it feels. The extra inches may make the gun point better or feel better balanced.

Ive had the following barrels.....30, 28, and still have the 26 inch.

I prefer the balance and weight difference with the 26" barrel the best.
Although i find it a little harder to shoot trap with since i have to move a bit more, but hey i was a pretty crappy trap shooter from the start.
Not really sure if this is something weird that happens with me but i find the gun seems to shoot a little higher now that i have the shorter one on.
Cant comment on ballistics but im definatly happy. PM if you have anything else to ask.

If you plan on using the firearm for Wingshooting only then 26 inch bbl should be adequate, IMO. A pump (or auto) will have a longer OAL anyway compared to a sxs or o/u shotgun.

Thanx guys, looking at my old Mossberg 500 that I just gave to my son, and it has a 30" barrel no wonder it's a bugger to get in and out of the safe.

Depends on your shooting style/ability. Some guys prefer a longer barrel to help smooth out their swing. And depends on the game you shoot - a 30" barrel on a pump would be damned awkward for shooting snipe or ruffies, but an advantage for pass shooting ducks and geese.

I've always preferred the 26 inch barrel length on my pump shotguns. As altagunguy said, you won't see a loss in velocity. Go with a Benelli Nova, it's a great gun.

Thanx for the answers guys, went with a 28" 870 today it just felt nice, $30 rebate too. Gotta put in a plug for the Canadian tire on Southland, great people at the gun counter and man do they have inventory. And I got CT bucks.

Well I get to try her out tomorrow upland opens in 316, thanx to CGN member Buzz for passing that on. If all goes well fool-hen on the barbie.
