New to me 721, extractor or ejector issue?

Hey folks...
Have a nice 721 in 300H&H. I've been putting off loading anything for it, but had a rainy weekend and figured I'd get something started.

Working with new Hornady brass, run through Redding FL sizer, trimmed back to 2.840".

I seem to be having extractor problems, which I gather are not uncommon with this model. About 75% of the time, the bolt closes hard on a dummy round, and then doesn't extract. Round pushes out easily with a cleaning rod...doesn't seem to be hung up in the chamber or anything, and no strange marks on the brass that I can see. The other 25% of the time, bolt closes easily, and the cartridge extracts cleanly. Doesn't seem to have anything to do with the dummy rounds, as one round will work fine, then not work next time. I can't find any variations on cases or dummy rounds that would contribute to the problem.

Was wondering about maybe too much spring on the ejector...would that contribute to the hard bolt closing? I've seen some posts about taking a couple coils off that spring.

Does one need any special tools to disassemble that bolt? Looks like a roll pin holding things in place. I'd imagine knocking that out causes the plunger to enter near Earth orbit?

I honestly don't know what the extractor is supposed to look like...I took some pics and posted them here: https://imgur.com/a/K7th5gl

To me, it almost looks like something silver soldered at one end by the ejector plunger, but maybe that's what it is supposed to look like. What I think is the extactor ring only appears to go about 3/4 of the way around the inside bolt face relief...again, not sure if that is normal or not.

Maybe someone put a 700 extractor in it and isn't setup right , I have a 722 that had similar issues and was able to tweak a 700 extractor to work it shouldn't close hard otherwise it damages the brass.

An m16 type extractor is the best I've seen when installed on one of these bolts and what Rem does on the 338 lapua they work really nice

I think that appears to be the case...comparing to other pics, it does appear to be a 700 extractor.

have you dismantled the bolt for a complete cleaning. might be gummed up.

I have not...if I can figure out how to take it apart, I will absolutely do so :)

Ya, the more I look at it, I'm thinking a badly modded 700 extractor. The silver solder is where the rivet hole would be.

So, If I'm going to get this fixed right...what's the best option? Have it properly modded to take a new 700 extractor? M16 type? Replace bolt completely? I see PTG has some nice stuff...sure not cheap though :)

A 721 is a clip-in extractor. Later 700s went with a riveted style. Current 700s use a clip-in, but different than the 721.
Don't know what you mean when you say there is silver solder. There shouldn't be any. Sounds as if someone did an improvised extractor installation. There would not have been a rivet originally. Hope the bolt isn't spoiled.
I have made up bolts using the PT&G body. Silver solder on a handle. Different handle options are available. Not a difficult job with suitable jigs.

Ya, and looking at pics of the two different types, I think someone has installed a 700 extractor on this one. To me, looks like silver solder where the rivet normally would be (Just right of the ejector in the pic below)

That might be a rivet head. If so, it might be possible to tweak the 700 extractor. Hard closing could be because the extractor isn't snapping cleanly over the rim. Might be jamming against the casehead, instead of snapping over it.
