358 norma

It has a following with guys that like .35 calibers. It works and will kill stuff but the calibers in either side of .35 (.338 and .375) make more sense to me.

Factory ammo is obtainable but not super common.

Its a "Thumper" with power to spare for any N.A. game.

Very nicely balanced 35 cal round. Norma brass is spendy,
but the cases can easily be made from 338 Win mag.

Recoil will be apparent in lighter rifles, but is manageable.
Dave.

:)Good call Dave. My interest started in attempting to get an example of each of the calibres shown on the old red covered Norma reloading manual. Apparently the three were the effort of cooperation between Norma and Schultz & Larsen. They are the 7x61S&H, the 308NM and the 358NM. During my search for a 358NM in a Schultz & Larsen, I was offered a Husqvarna model 1651 in that calibre, which initially I resisted the temptation;), until I saw photos of it. Long story short, I now/still have two 358NM's:d.
-7x61S&H in a model 68DL Schultz & Larsen
-308NM in a model 65DL Schultz & Larsen
-358NM in a model 68DL Schultz & Larsen
-358NM in a model 1651 Husqvarna
I had to do a little searching but at local gun shows, I ended up acquiring seven boxes of 358NM factory loads and a 'sizeable' quantity of brass. ;)Easily enough to meet my needs:).

I've got a Husky 1651 in 358 Norma Mag, and love it. Bit on the large size for NZ game, but with my reloads its about the same trajectory as my 30-06 out to about 250-300, so I can hunt with either and know what its capable of. Im not a big guy, but can comfortably shoot it prone. I even used it at a gong shoot and was able to take it out to 500 using holdover. Its a fun older calibre, if you reload, even better, and very decisive on animals. Brass is available from Norma.

It’s no better than a 338 win mag, a lot worse imo. I got rid of mine. In practice the better bullet selection negates the little bit of extra velocity you may get.

The nice thing about the 358NM, is reduced loads with jacketed pistol bullets! Also it is accurate and puts down game fast.
The S&L are the nicest examples, but BRNO also made rifles in the Calibre, though a lot heavier than the Shultz or Husky!
I tried a few years ago to get Weatherby to make one in their Mk5 deluxe, but unless it a Weatherby round, they don't want to make it, but I here that's changing?
All hail the 35cal!!!

that cz would be the ticket, i prefer a heavy rifle for powerful shells. that's on my list for sure.

I've heard that weak "bullet selection" argument before. The fact is that there are lots of 35cal bullets out there and certainly plenty to get a couple loads for a rifle. I never used more than one type bullet for any of the many 35s I've owned over the years and never wanted for more.

I like mine. Model 98 Mauser, 250 gr. @2750. Took it bison hunting, no bison so shot at some imprompto targets. Even my buddy tried it out, and liked it

i'd really like to find a brno!

If you're referring to the BRNO 602, you will quickly find it very difficult to find one of those in 358NM and if you do, it will be quite expensive.

On top of that, the 602 is grossly overweight for a 358 or even a 375.
