Stag 10 Brass Help

Hey guys. I have built 4 stag 10s now and noticed something I wanted to see if anyone could help me with. My latest build is using a Faxon big gunner barrel in 6.5 creedmore. The first 5 rounds through the gun the brass looks rough. The chamber itself doesn't look shiney but doesn't look or feel rough at all. The barrels headspaced correctly. Not sure if this is normal. My 308 Faxon barrels do this a bit but not nearly as much. Also this one is using an armalite gas tube. mRA clamp on gas block and stock stag 10 buffer and BCG. It is not locking back after a round fired. Not sure if they are related. The brass does cycle manually but sometimes feels stickey

Let me know what you think. Left is what the brass look like before firing (in 308 not 6.5 but for an idea in the photo)

Yep, rough chamber. I also had a rough chamber in an MRA barrel and received terrible customer service concerning it.

Faxon and Maple Ridge Armoury are the companies I would stay away from personally. Both seam to have issues with either accuracy, quality control, and/or customer service.

Mine went back for replacement under warranty but, once it got there they refused to replace it unless I paid $50(even though they said they would replace it in email). I wouldn't have sent it in if they weren't going to replace it and I will be damned if I was going to pay more money to fix their poor manufacturing. Their solution was to hone(polish)the chamber, removing some of the nitriding, which I am not happy about. Lesson learned, they will never get another dollar from me.

I'm not sure if you would have better luck with Faxon(I would guess so though)but, I would just shoot it or sell it(with full disclosure) personally and then pick a proven quality manufacturer next time that knows what they are doing and takes care of their customers. That is my plan...

Curious if you guys are all experiencing this with nitrided barrels? Perhaps the treatment process is causing the chamber roughness and not the actual reaming. If so what is the treatment process doing to the bore of the barrel. Is it rough as well? The only rifle I have that leaves the brass looking like the brass you guys posted is one that has a chrome lined chamber and bore.

I have 3 stainless MRA barrels and the chambers are all mirror smooth. Example here is my latest MRA barrel in 6.5 Grendel (which I haven't had a chance to fire yet :( ). The cell phone picture doesn't do it any justice as I couldn't get it to focus well on the chamber but I can assure you that it's shiny smooth. The spots you see in the chamber are just dust.

I was thinking about getting another MRA 223 barrel and going with a nitrided one this time BUT if it's the nitrided barrels that are the problem I'll stay away.

Yes, I suspect it is an issue with the nitriding process. My plan was to get the replacement in stainless just to be safe. That is, before I was lied to and fed a bunch of BS from MRA. I suggest you think twice about supporting MRA as they apparently don't stand behind their products, lie to their customers, and don't appear to know how to make a barrel properly. My barrel also has small machining errors and the barrel extension(not made by MRA but, apparently good enough to use)has super sharp edges on the feed ramps and other splines that badly scratch the brass due to not being knocked down before NiB coating. This thing beats the crap out of Brass lol. I will report back on how accurately it shoots but, no matter what it is getting taken off my gun out of principle(I don't support or advertise for companies that don't take care of their customers).

I had the same thing with my Stag barrel. I was told that this was normal with a chrome lined barrel. It doesn't affect function at all and will disappear when you tumble your brass.

That being said, my Criterion barrel is also chrome lined bit the brass comes out fine.

Most people seam to think the Criterion/Fulton Armory is the best lower cost option, I tend to agree from what I have read. They seam to shoot great and I haven't read about any issues. They are unfortunately a bit of a pain to get but, that tends to be par for the course living in Canada lol. Personally, I am going with a custom McGowen built to my specs. Jerry from Mystic Precision is bringing it in for me and has been very good to deal with.

I think you may mean MRA and "Faxon"?

As said, the best light to mid-weight lower cost option is the Criterion/Fulton Armory imo. It will need to be imported unless you want the 20" with headspaced bolt included. If you contact FA they have a Canadian importer setup to help you out or you can use your choice in importers. Here it is and on sale to boot..

The fact of the matter is that you get what you pay for in my experience. If you want a top quality barrel you may have to go over $500. It is only a couple of hundred more for a full custom built to your specs.

The more I'm looking into it since I posted it I'm starting to think that it might simply be made for 2A by Faxon. There's nothing concrete backing this up but everything about the 2 barrels is eerily similar.
