2019 Waterfowl thread

Just out of curiosity - I've been doing some clay bird shooting using target loads ~1200 fps. My goose loads are going to be 1550. That will make a pretty huge difference in leads. Can anyone give me a ballpark as to how much you lead on pass shooting, as when they are coming in to land on decoys.

You're getting caught up in your own head trying to figure out something that your brain will already sort out for you. The differences in leads are less than the spread of your pattern at most ranges. I found when I started focusing on hitting the beak rather than the entire bird my amount of headshot birds increased dramatically.

If you shoot where you would to hit the chest with the target loads, the waterfowl loads, will place the pattern in the head /neck area, where it belongs.

Fantastic. Thanks.

It takes alot of grass to get from bare bones to finished with an A-frame!! I made it two different sides. One for facing a field(grass), the other(grass and palm mats)for facing a slough.

I'm impressed, great job. One bit of advice, your hanging baskets need a little moisture.;)

Looks great Spank. You’ll be smashing all kinds of birds out of that setup. And at the end of the day, super easy to take it down and move it off to the next smashing grounds

The simplest of blinds that I have used that can be carried in and out was the blind camo cloth pre-mounted on stakes. Roll it up for travel and unroll and stake it into the ground. Cheap and easy to do and worked real well. They also sell those rolls of marsh grass which work well, but they are much more costly

Most coffin blinds now a days have back pack straps and easy disassemble to be carried. Still going to be a slugging across a field with any blind, I've dragged mine most of the time, because my gun case and bunch of decoys are inside. But I dont have to do it often as can usually drive a truck, atv to the spot. Not easy any way you look at it

Awesome morning! Shot our 4 person limit of dark geese with 8 of them being Specks. The trap and skeet shooting practice really paid off for my gf Deb. She nailed her first honker this morning at about 15 yards folding it cleanly in a puff of feathers then continued to lay a smackdown on birds. A flock of 3 came in and she shot the final one to finish off our limit with a beautiful 35-40 yard crossing shot that folded the bird clean. She used her new Beretta A400 Xplor 20ga with 3" 1 1/8oz #2 Kent Fasteel. It was great too not only to be back in the game but to share the hunt with two of my best buddies who guide for Buckparadise Outfitters. It was also my first AB opener after moving here over 6 years ago and I think their's as well as we all usually hunt the SK side as they are SK residents. Can't wait to get back out there.

Great job Spank! And judging by the photos, the Avian X blind is invisible!

It definitely didn't bother the birds any. We put two of them together end to end about a foot apart and clipped the panels together at the front except for the bottom two buckles. My buddies dog layed on the ground between the two of them overlooking the decoy spread. It was a great setup.

This will be my first year waterfowl hunting. I'm in the same area. I've been scouting around when I can trying to figure out where to go, and I've gotten a couple of ideas. Looks like you got a nice haul!
