Hi,
Just arrived on beautiful Victoria and looking for hunting opportunity.
Stupid question but is there any way to hunt on the island and not have to go with those expensive outfitters company ?
I understand the Roosevelt Elk is not possible outside outfitters but what about deer and the island bear ?
Same question for if I go in the mainland ?
thanks

We are region one.
Click on both links above.

Take the core course if you have not done so already.
Island Outfitters had the dropbox to sign up for the Core and PAL.
They also have printed copies of the Hunting & Trapping Regulations Synopsis.

Are you a resident? Do you have a license?

Got my posting message on the island in July (Im a service member)
I am in the process to have my outdoor card from Ontario changes with BC.
Ive been told by one guy working at Island Outfitter that I have to do the course again according with BC rules but someone else told me otherwise.
When I was a Quebec resident and moved to Ontario. I only had to provide my outdoor card number and they changed it for ontario outdoor without doing anyting.
How comes I have to do the course again to get the BC outdoor card ?

Bring Cash is the reason.

Do not believe everything the guys behind the counter tell you....

From the BC Hunting Regs.http://www.env.gov.bc.ca/fw/tmp/hunting-trapping-synopsis-2018-2020.pdf

Please note: In some cases, you may qualify for a residency exemption. This applies to any hunter who is:* Currently serving full-time in the Canadian military and who has made his or her permanent residence in B.C. for 30 consecutive days prior to applying for B.C. resident hunting credentials. Appropriate military identification and posting documentation is required.

The same applies to current Men and Women in the RCMP , I just can not locate that information right now with a binge marathon of donutoperator taking place right now.
Active members will not have to do the course again , just provide the previous provinces documentation and pay the license fees and you will be hunting in 32 days .
Lots of area on the south coast Vancouver Island that will require some exploration.
Rob

thanks Rob
much appreciated

that guy behind the counter at OI in Victoria seems to have someting against Service members. He was a bit arrogant with his ''with all respect, you will have to do the course again, service member or not, period'' lol

On the Island all the deer are hanging out in the towns. We're getting a lot more cougar sighting in town as they are forced to follow the deer into urban areas.

catapult, I'm not sure if changes were made to requirements in BC but here is what I would do if I were you.
Locate a Front Counter BC (formerly BC access) / Government Agents office.
Go there with your current out of province hunting documents, your proof of BC residency and your service documents/ID
my guess is you will be better served there versus dealing with people at the hunting/fishing stores.

My friend from Ontario did what I suggest and had his BC Resident Hunter number the same day and was able to go purchase a license and tags.
The new system here may have a waiting time because they mail stuff these days.

But 100%..... the first place to go is to a Front Counter BC/Government Agents office.

Go to a Service BC location with your previous hunting licence, Proof of Residency(Driver's Licence and Hydro Bill), a letter from your CO attesting to your posting and that you are serving full time, all documentation in respect to any precious hunting courses . . . and go in uniform!

Some of the residency requirements are up to interpretation so go prepared. The worst they can do is tell you where to go!

this is my second posting in Esquimalt and since 2005 I still own a unit condo that is rented out. Maybe this will also help me to qualify as BC resident ?
I am not living in the unit since family has grown since 2008 and it is too small for us lol
I am waiting a military housing at the moment and we live on base in a military quarter.
my posting message's date is March 29th but I arrived only in july

I live up north and had more close encounters with my vehicle and wildlife in a week in victoria than I do in a month up here.
