Is the 300 Winchester mag too much....?

I was once coyote hunting with a friend about 12 years ago when the scope on his 6mm was causing problems....so he used his 300 Win with his regular hunting load of a 180 Speer Mag Tip...the holes in the coyotes were actually smaller with the 300 than the 6mm and an 85 Sierra....
My 300 wsm shoots 3 of them into one ragged hole at 100m. I had picked up a half box in a trade deal and decided to give them a try. They are hell on crows and ravens.
I skin my coyotes so I have been a little afraid to try the V-Max on them.

Yep, but as long as it's legal, shooting varmints with your cannon is great practice for elephant season.

"...than the 6mm and an 85 Sierra..." An 85 grain what? SP? HP? An 85 grain varmint bullet or one built for deer sized beasties?

hell i shoot rabbits that i intend to eat with my 300 mag...
this is a picture of the mountain reedbuck I shot with a 300 win mag at about 200 yards with a 168 gr TSX. If I was at 6 ocock, he was facing 7:30 and the PH said don't shoot him in the shoulder it will ruin the cape, so I moved back just in front of his back leg and basically shot his ass end off.
This should also answer any questions about TSX bullets on smaller animals and wether they open reliably.

Almost certainly the 85gr BTHP, pretty much a staple of the weight group for 6mm cartridges. It's an all purpose light deer/varmint bullet. I find it ideal for coyotes (though I prefer the 87gr Vmax), too light for deer, but plenty use them on deer.
That is a knife wound, with smaller animals that are down and mortally wounded but not dead, the PH grabs then and stbbes them inthe back of the head so no more damage to the trophy occurs.
We were a little surprised by that, but he did it with my son's springbok as well.
