I've been adamant about staying away from the AR's but lately I feel that I may be succumbing to the weaknesses lol. Anyway I can't really afford to go out and buy one (or just the upper or lower) right now. I was thinking that maybe I would part ways with one of my hunting rifles to help finance an AR build. My 2 options are either a Remington 700BDL. 243 with open sights or a Tikka T3 Lite .270 with Simons ATEC scope. Given that these 2 calibers are relatively similar in size, it's pretty much a coin toss for me as to which one I'd keep. Any suggestions?

HK Hopeful,

I like both Remington and Tikka and own few of them. I know both are reliable and good guns, so my choice will go rather to the caliber.
If I hunt deer, moose and bear, choice is simple, I will pick .270Win to stay.
For smaller creatures, I guess .243Win, caliber I am never going to own....

No brainer for me. Dump the idea to build an AR.

But if you insist, then keep the Tikka; slighter bigger caliber, better rifle IMHO.

If you're going to have only one hunting rifle, the 270 is more versatile hands down, so keep it. If you're stuck being a one rifle hunter, you've got to go with the most versatile cartridge.

You're honestly not gonna get a lot of coin from either of those rifles. Thanks to the SPS there's a new (low) bottom in the used 700 market, and T3s... well, they're already cheap. If you like these rifles at all, my advice is to keep them.

As for the AR... every time I get the urge, I try to remember that no matter how awesome it is, at the end of the day I'll either have a military rifle that I will never use in combat, or a varmint rifle that I'm not legally allowed to use on varmints. Neither option appeals to me, so I'm still AR-free.

I've got 22's, the 243, the 270, a 303, a 308, a 458 and some 12g s\g's so I'm not going to be limiting myself to just one rifle for hunting.

Does make sense...

Why?
Because it doesn't interest you?

No, not that.

What Bishopus said; that's why.

I'd put the Simons on the .243, sell it, and buy a VXIII in 2.5x8 for the .270 and some reloading gear. :)

.

Choice has been made, the 243 has been traded off. Not for an AR part but for another handgun. Yet another toy I can't hunt with

you could part ways with both rifles and only be part way to financing an AR build. like any gun, to piece one together yourself the cost would be out of sight. you could by 5 AR's for what it's going to cost you piece by piece. then' you'll end up, as some one pointed out , with restricted firearm that you legally can't hunt with. keep the .270. it's the one with far more options.

While this may be true...they sure are a lot of fun! :) I had one for awhile, and will likely have another before long. At the moment, I have an AR180B which, to me seems like pretty much the same thing, and I can hunt with it!

Anyway, I say if you want one - go get one as soon as funds allow...before you can't anymore.

Best wishes, Jeff/1911.
