Found the problem, now which option is best to fix it.

1) A punch on the front face of the pin to increase pin diameter on that side.
2) Stake pin slightly to hammer.
3) Blue Locktite on front face of pin to hammer.
4) Round off back side of pin to make it self centering.

Or a combination of the above?

#4 I did to a troublesome S&W M52 mag that got it's follower cross pin stuck on grip frame prevent rounds from moving up.

Interesting. It's been a while since I had my Python apart. Seems like that pin should be quite snug. I'd be prone to find (or make) another pin that fits tighter. Not a fan of 'peening' (hope I spelled that correctly) or additives to secure pins. My two cents.

cheers,

Take center punch tool like this one:

and single punch on ether side of the hole right next to the edge. Beauty of automatic center punch is you do not have to use hammer. Just repeat punch till you obtain desired result.

Also you can take pin out and center punch right in the middle of the pin so the punch won't be wisible at all. This will hopefully create enough friction for the pin not to move once it is pushed back in. You just have to find a clever way of doing it this way.

Skip the center punch. You'll be back fixing that kludge with yet another kludge, time and time again.

In a perfect world, a new pin, that is a light press fit on at least one side of the hammer, would be far better.

In an imperfect world, hose the crap out of the part to remove any oils, using acetone, brake cleaner, or such, alternated with blowing dry, and carefully apply some bearing retainer locktite to the outer edges of the pin holes with a toothpick. You just want the stuff to wick in to hold the pin, without interfering with the action of the overiding lever that pivots on it. Once it has cured (RTFI) oil the pivot and assemble.

While I won't stake a lot more on that it will last forever, what I will say, is that at least, if it doesn't, you have not left divots all over the parts with a center punch.

There have been all manner of hole closing punches used on various items over the centuries. Without exception, they all come across looking like they were done by the wandering tinker, rather than by a competent workman.

Before Video showing the hammer getting stuck

Went with using a center punch on both sides of the pin

After fix. Tough to open and close the cylinder while holding a cellphone in left hand.
