Need a AR15 barrel that is good for 20K

I would suggest that the more practical path to achieving this goal is to flip the parameters a bit. Buy three barrels that can do 7k rounds at 2MOA each for the same budget.

I think I might do this. Lots of barrels in the $300/400 range that would do the trick.

So you’re saying the barrel extension is 2 pieces? The lugs were pressed in?

I think the barrel extension actually cracked in half... That's what it looks like to me. It could probably be removed but I think you'd have to weld something onto it to get it off...

To the OP, the rifling won't ever "look" like it's degraded, the throat erosion is usually what kills the accuracy in a rifle.

Hammer forging, salt bath nitriding or hard chrome will all help reduce throat erosion as i put in my post.

The barrels I mentioned (Daniel Defense or FN) will have a full service life of between 20,00 and 30,000 rounds which means little or no accuracy degradation at that point. After that you will likely notice a very slow minor accuracy loss over the next few tens of thousands of rounds. It's possible to get 50,000 out of a barrel like that if you're not doing mag dumps and getting the barrel extremely hot (not as much of an issue with 5 or 10 round mags) and have it still be doing around 2moa or so. Which IMHO is a very reasonable accuracy level with such a high round count.

Look at what the Swiss Arms SIG550 is capable of doing in terms of longevity and accuracy, then realize it's a cold hammer forged barrel with a nitrided finish, just like Daniel Defense barrels.

I guess it probably broke off like this.

.

I don't know about that.:)

I have 2 worn out AR barrels that I replaced last year, from S&W MP15 rifles. One was keyholing every shot, one was keyholing about 50% of the time. Looking down those barrels you can barely see any rifling. Looks like almost like shotgun barrels! If you hold it just right in the light you can see just a trace of the lands and grooves. :)

I'm still googling DD barrels to find what's available in Canada. Lots of complete rifles, less barrels!

Wolverine Supplies is the importer for Daniel Defense here, so they will bring in anything. You may need to order them in if they don't have stock. IRG is a good place to look at the FN barrels, I don't think too many Canadian retailers have them in stock.

I suppose eventually you'll see a barrel worn out, but I've seen pics from guys that put 80-100 thousand rounds through and there was still rifling, there was an article in the firearms blog:

As you can see the throat erosion is excessive here, but in the second pic still rifling. Not that the barrel will be accurate at all at that point lol.

Heres an option that hasn’t been mentioned......

Stag offers a full lifetime warranty on their firearms, so even if your barrel poops the bed after 6k rounds, it will be replaced for free.....

See what arms east has to offer!

That said, there was a video floating around where a fella (lucky gunner labs?) ran 6-10k rounds through 6 identical rifles to test wear with different ammo types. Lots and lots of mag dumps, and 10-12k was the longest lasting bbl, 6k was the shortest. He made an argument that the ammo cost saving with going with the cheapest ammo paid for a new bbl in the 6k round gun....

Cheers!
