Hornady 9.3x62 brass ... no more, thanx

Stay away from the Hornady 286gr bullet, too. It is not at all reliable on big game.

Ted

Prior to obtaining my ;) '.366 Wagner', from a friend close by, I purchased a box of 100 new Lapua brass and a sizeable quantity of 285gr PRVI bullets. Later, when the opportunity presented itself, I gradually acquired a decent assortment of other bullets in a few different brands and weights. With my initial accuracy results using the PRVI's :), I haven't 'tried' any of the others, ;) yet. Also, for brass, I lucked into eight boxes of once fired Norma. Enough to keep me busy for a while.
Have you tried any of the 285gr PRVI on game?? And, good to see you back :d .

The 285 PRVI works good on game, For brass I neck up and fire form .35 Whelen Remington brass with good results.

Good to know :), and thanks for the input. Again, with the accuracy results I've obtained with the 285gr PRVI in my initial reloads, I haven't even 'tried' any of the other bullets in my little stash. It would be hard, for me, to beat my initial accuracy results. The bullets I have available in my 'stash'; are;
- 285gr PRVI SP
- 250gr Speer
- 286gr Norma
- 231gr Norma
- 286gr Barnes TSX flat base
- 290gr Matrix bonded
Again, I had anticipated doing a bunch of testing,........;) but

Never tried Hornady brass except with factory ammo but I've got just over 100 - 9.3X62 Norma Brass that I've had for over 20 years and loaded it a few times with no signs of issues yet.

I've used brass from hornady superformance ammunition in 7x64, on first reload 60% of cases had a hair crack from base to shoulder. No issues witn Norma or RWS after 4 reloads with much hotter charges. Norma and rws brass weigh within 1 grain of each other, wheres Hornady is 11-13 grains lighter, way thinner than euro brass and brittle it seems.

On another note, I've never been a fan of any Hornady brass, prefer Lapua and Winchester over it, maybe even Rem brass. I've had lots more issues with Hornady brass and ammo over the years vs all other brands combined.

Hornady doesn't make their own brass afaik. They have it made by someone else, and different lots of the same case could be made by different suppliers even though both will carry the Hornady headstamp. I think Norma was doing a lot of the Hornady brass at one time.

I have some GRAFS brass that is good stuff, and the PPV is good too.

I also have a Husqvarna commercial Sporter in 9.3x62 - have only ever used PPU (PRVI) brass and no issues. Have used 286 PPU, 286 Nosler Partition and 250 Nosler Accubond bullets so far. As result of this thread, dug out loading manuals. Nosler #7 drawing calls out .476" diameter just ahead of the extractor rim; Hornady 9th calls out .467" diameter in the same place. That is .009" difference! Speer #14 calls out .4764" (12.1 mm). No clue which is closer to "correct", but neither of them is showing the .473" from 30-06 or 308 Win. Maybe someone, at one time in Hornady, transposed the "6" and "7" and the error is "stuck" in the corporate mind-think... And, therefore, within tolerances, they are receiving exactly what they ordered from their supplier.

Hornady doesn't make any components aside from the bullets. Their loaded ammo uses material made by other companies entirely.

Bought a Husqvarna in 9.3 *62 with a Mauser 96 action from Tradex many years ago topped it up with a Tasco scope. This Gun is one of our Rentals and proved to be a 100% reliable Workhorse, many one shot kills on Moose & Bear.
We reload 270 grain Speers round nose, Brass is RWS never no issues with that setup with one exception.

Factory RWS shells wont feed and get stuck in the Magazine coming up, the problem is the RWS Bullet shape. As I said before no problems with 270 Grain Speer.

Cheers
