Found the marking

[Ruger30-06]

I found the factory stamp on my Mauser 98k. Its stamped BYF signaling that it was made by Oberndorf. Could any give me a like or some info on this Oberndorf factory?

All Mausers have 4 (and few have 5) digit serial numbers. At 9999 the count restarted at A0001. As I recall you need four or five pieces of information to individually identify a 98K:

maker's mark
serial number
letter before the serial number
year
other markings.

The Oberndorf plant is/was the main Mauser factory, but that doesn't really mean much because all 98K rifles were built to a very high standard at all the factories.

On the barrel there is no letter in the serial number. But on the stock there is a R before the numbers.

so the stock and reciever serial numbers match?....besides the 'R'?

Klunk: that would be a negative. No numbers match (doesnt bother me).

There's a ton of information on the Code 42's or BYF's (Oberndorf) manufactured rifles in the Milsurp Knowledge Library. You should be able to compare your rifle and all its markings to "all correct" examples like the ones below. There's also material (PDF files) with the complete backgorund of this manufacturer and its processes.

During the Nazi era, Mauser Oberndorf originally had the factory code S/42. It was shortly thereafter changed to 42. In 1941, it changed to byf. In early 1945 it changed to SVW.

This is the same factory that had made Mausers since Wilhelm & Paul Mauser first introduced the Mauser Infantry Gewehr in 1871 and was a primary poroduced of Gewehr 98 long rifles during the first world war and K98k rifles during the second world war.
