Heckler-Koch-wins-Contract-to-Upgrade-British-Military-Rifles-1.jpg

German-based firearms giant Heckler & Koch announced they have won a significant contract to upgrade SA80 5.56mm NATO rifles for the UK Ministry of Defence.

The current contract is valued at $18.6 million (£15 million pounds) and will build or upgrade the UK Arsenal of service rifles into SA80A3 variants. The British Army’s “Equip to Fight” Programme, an overhaul initiative designed to help modernize the UK fighting forces, has an optional two-year contract extension that could add another $62.2 million (£50 million pounds) to HK’s bank account, with the work split between the company’s facilities in Germany and the UK.

The SA80A3 upgrades involve a new foregrip, an improved upper receiver, and extra internal safety features. It also has the capability to use the HK AG36 40mm grenade launcher, dubbed the L123A2 in British Service. The rifles are going with a neutral earth color scheme which has shown better thermal performance and doesn’t contrast and stand out like solid black. HK’s variant of Keymod is being used on the handguards for ancillary equipment.

The SA80 series Individual Weapon, a 5.56mm NATO bullpup designed by Enfield in the 1980s, was originally produced in England for the British armed forces in three variants– the L85 rifle, L86 light support weapon, and the .22LR L98A1 cadet rifle– with just under 372,000 of all types produced. After Enfield shuttered in 1988, production was moved to Royal Ordnance’s Nottingham Small Arms Facility until 2001, when that British factory closed its doors as well.

Since then, HK has been upgrading the SA80 in a series of generational improvements, first as the SA80A2 and now as the SA80A3, with work done at the former Nottingham works, now run by Heckler & Koch GB as NSAF Limited. The original SA80 rifles were riddled with problems and in the world of modern 5.56 small arms it may actually rank worse than the M16’s rough introduction. H&K saved the rifle and has since crafted it into a workhorse for the UK.

Personally I think it is still one of the more poorly executed designs still in service but H&K got it running.

More of note than their UK SA80 program, Heckler & Koch is having great success selling their HK416 series rifles to military forces worldwide, with the platform seeing adoption in Norway, France, U.S. SOCOM, and the U.S. Marines as the M27 (it still takes a bayonet). Further, the company has allied with Textron Systems and Olin-Winchester to develop an offering for the U.S.Army’s futuristic new Next Generation Squad Weapon program.

H&K and Sig Sauer are continuing to fight it out in the top seats for Military and LEO contracts for their weapons. Sig is going hard for full services (Guns, Ammo, Suppressors, Optics, Training Aids, FoF Airsoft, and Free WiFi) and it will be interesting to see how the 20’s look with weapons and tech emerging.

The SA80 reminds me of all the idiot kids who used to soup up their Dodge Neons with spoilers, lights, ground effects, loud mufflers, ect ect. In the end you can decorate it all you want, but it was a piece of sheit to begin with and still is a piece of sheit after tinkering with it. This rifle is no different.

Soooooo... trying to save one of the worst military bulpups ever made ?

British Army is being starved of funds and needs to "Keep on Trucking".
Basically, the SA80 a mediocre bullpup AR-180 that gets the job done most of time under most conditions...
Sinking money in a mediocre but know weapon system might seem crazy but does make sense economically when you simply can't afford to buy anything new.
(For example, I kept my father Dodge Caravan for 14 years and almost 400 000km because it mostly worked and I could afford a 500-1000$ repair but not a new $20 000 van).

Lesson to this: being poor sucks ;)

At under $200 per rifle, I'm sure it will be a worthwhile upgrade - for the less than 191,000 total strength. Although I think that if they simply replaced the POS, they probably wouldn't need 2 rifles for everyone in uniform who isn't already issued a better rifle. Quick quiz, how do you know if the British Army cares if you live or die? Answer: look at the rifle they hand you.

It is a stop gap solution because no one can figure out what to do next.

Nato has been making noises about 5.56, but they still can't figure out what it is better than 5.56. With the French and Portuguese, as well as other smaller Baltic places jumping into the new 5.56 systems, there isn't really any substantial driving force in European NATO to do anything else. While the German is pretending they need to look at something else other than the 5.56 before buying new rifles, they really don't have the financial resources and the will to start a new system. It is just a show to make the committee happy they have done the due diligence.

So nations like the UK and Canada which are needing new infantry small arms, that are not big enough to drive big changes and end up following anyways, are sitting on old systems and trying to avoid be the first guy to do anything. I think Canada is finally close to the breaking point of sticking with 5.56 . ( they have already done so with new C6 and now C-20 )

We will see how the US NGSW go, but I doubt the people who actually have to do the fighting are advocates of going with battle rifle sized weapon to replace M4. Even if the US is successful with whatever new 6'ish calibre, it could be too late for many NATO countries until the next replacement cycle, that is at least 15 years from now.

Yes, we will be shooting 5.56 until we retire.

With the Russian sticking to the 5.45x39 and Chicoms with the 5.8x42, I dont think anyone is ready to jump onto anything different anytime soon. Until after the next real global conflict happens. We will be sticking with the 5.56x45 + 7.62x51 + 9x19 for some long time go come.
Next wave of small arms dev will be pushed by arming AI bots and drones, that would be the true game changer.
When we go to the stars, then will be switching to plasma pulse rifles and rail guns.

In that case, maybe it time to buy future on tungsten.
When the war with China goes hot, both side will be using a lot of AP tungsten round to deal with the body armor that everyone except his dog is wearing now a days.

It has more rails and a few tweaks, a reasonable plan. The innards felt like a sardine can, not a luxurious piece of kit, but pleasant to shoot on the range. Hope they all get upgraded before the no-deal goes down and the time is right for fighting in the street, boy.

All the hate for the SA 80. The brits kicked ass this year on our turf at CAFSAC. Put our C7 rifles to shame in the accuracy department. I had a go on the L85 and the L86LSW in FA. Very nice! Would have if allowed.

Well there has been a lot of turd polishing that has occurred since they were first issued. A lot of people can't get past that initially ####ty rifle. Plus it's a bullpup, so that's just never going to sit well with some people.

I tried the version that already been worked on once by HK, problem is that the rifle has design flaws built into the gun everywhere, as Gun Jesus said "It's a gun built by engineers, just not firearms engineers".

The biggest issue I have is how ####ing heavy that thing is and the center of gravity being so far back. The Elcan (which was called Hell can, and not in a good way, by a bunch of guys) made the problem worse
The point of a bulpup is to a shorter, lighter rifle, which the FAMAS by comparison did very well (though I don't like any delayed blowback action).
Nowadays the MDR does a decent job but I really want to try the VHS-2... and if I ever get one I am absolutely stamping "Betamax" on it (that is a meme worth keeping alive) !

This press release is just coming out? The Brits had these at CAFSAC two years ago and their shooting team filled a lot of top ten spots using them. These with the ELCAN are a pretty accurate package.

Brits are retiring the l86lsw. Love the ridiculous cyclic rate out of that little beast though.

The new l85 is free floated and the brits were using their own ammo... mix a chf free floated hk barrel with their new ammo and you get a very accurate rifle. Our c77 is not as accurate as it used to be. Plus their elcan os4x has a vastly superior reticle to our trash c79a2 reticle. During the vendor shoot i was much more impressed with the aussie f88 compared to the l85 if we're talking about the rifle ergos and trigger. But yes the brits did really well with their new rifles and glocks compared to us with our c7s and brownings.
