what do you guys do with your hides at the end of the day? I know I'm not suppose to throw it on the side of the road but what else? SK Wildlife Federation used to collect them but they stopped a few years ago

Ask around the local reserve and see if anyone is in need.
The elders might enjoy some old time tanning.
Or call your local taxidermist to see if they need a spare cape.
Or toss it in the composting bin if all else fails.

Good question. Some years ago I tried to dispose of a hide and carcass locally. I called the works department and they told me to take it to the local dump/landfill. So just to be sure I called the local dump/landfill number and they told me they would refuse to accept it. Like what? You'd think I was trying to dispose of nuclear waste. Anyways on the day of recycling pickup I saw the driver and he said "sure no problem" and he put it in his truck. Should I have been surprised?

If I don’t know anyone locally that wants them I just dump them back in the bush with the lower legs and head, my dogs get the bigger bones and a friend takes any blood/shot damaged meat, fat and bones for his dogs. There’s never much left over to dump in the bush.

Forgot to mention I live in SK and composting is a thing of a very distant future and nobody is really interested to take hides for free. Every year I have to throw them away and I hate to do it. Only kept one hide in so many years.

hats for hides?

I remember seeing something about it. I know it's something Ontario. Not sure if it is in other provinces.

I've seen adverts on kijiji from time to time asking for free hides for crafts. Check there, and perhaps advertise it under Free Stuff. If you can't find any use for it, dump it in the bush. It's a natural, organic, biodegradable product.

Hutterites often collect hides and tan for making gloves if you have a colony close to you (everybody in Sask or Ab. has one close). they collect them and have the colony in southern Ab. that has a tanning operation do the work on them.
