Hey All,

I just picked up a 1891 Finn Mosin 3-Line rifle. I'm currently in the process of giving it some TLC, and am wondering what the correct finish for the rifle is, and how a guy can replicate it.

I am familiar with using linseed oil on my enfields, but read that the Finn's used a kind of pine-tar oil or something like that, and I don't want to make the mistake of using the wrong kind of oil on the stock.

Cheers -Cameron

Problem is the finish can vary not only with models and years but also with the location of the service district the rifle was issued.
Some armorers used a mixture of turpentine, linseed oil and beeswax, other used pine tar and melted reindeer tallow, some other ones (usually Russian rifles) were simply left in their shellack finish and wiped down with a diluted shellack solution in alcohol to repair scratches and nicks.
And many other stocks were simply left dry.
For a historically correct restoration, you'll have to identify whatever kind of finish is left on your rifle and duplicate it.
