I honestly wouldn't bother spending $1300 for what most people consider an oddball/orphaned calibre. Sure, it's a nice gun (I have several S&W revolvers), but I just don't see the point in a revolver that is just as big and heavy as a 44, but not as powerful and an uncommon cartridge. (Bullseye's specs incorrectly list the Model 57 as 37 oz; Smith & Wesson state that it is 48 oz)
But, I suppose, for the feller that has everything, there's room in the safe for a Model 57.

I love the .41 mag, have an older minty model 57 and a 657 as well. It's not an orphan anymore than any other cartridge...realistically, the world could get by with a .30-06 to hunt with and a .357 or .44, maybe the .45 ACP. But, one of the fun parts about enjoying firearms is all the possibilities there are, which gives us the opportunity to fill up the safe and experiment and enjoy. The .41 fills a niche that Elmer Kieth, Skeeter Jones, and Bill Jordan thought needed filling. You going to argue with that Trinity?? Anyway, it's a great cartridge, and it fits in very nicely between the dozens of .44s and .357s that a guy also needs to have. Love 'em.
$1700 though... I only paid $1299 for my S&W 500 HIVIZ.
It has its fans and is a good underrated caliber. Jacketed projectiles can be difficult to find. Even finding lead Bullets can be a challenge. That's why I passed on one ( yes you can cast, but personally I'd rather have all my teeth pulled). I am a big fan of the Redhawk in 45 colt these days. Lots of options there and it can be loaded to 44mag specs
Smith & Wesson have several 45 ACP revolvers, just none with a long enough barrel for Canada.

I like the 41mag. Its a very hard hitting cartridge with the right load. Has equal to or better ballistics than the 10mm & the 44mag.
LEE has two molds for this cartridge, a 195 SWC & a 210TL bullets. Cast your own 41 bullets, powder coat & you're good to go.
So, suppose you wanted to add a big bore relover to your collection & you don't already own a .44. If you bought a new 41mag you still have to feed it the same as a 44mag.

I actually found Hornady XTP in 210 gr, and Nosler JHP in 210 gr readily available. Put anywhere from 21.0 gr to 21.9 of H110 behind it with magnum primers, and it's tasty load.
Custom Reloading sells 210 gr Berry's plated for the 41. I purchased some 225 gr lead RNFP from Cactus Plains and the Bullet Barn used to sell 41 as well.
I like the 41, have three of them. 3" Magnaport 657, 4" blue 57, and a 6.5" inch Ruger Blackhawk. Good guns. - dan

I picked up a new 57 last year to be the baby brother to my 657-2 8 3/8" nickel plated. I still prefer the pre lock models but that's a rant for another day.
Almost pulled the trigger on a 57-3 last weekend for $1300. Should have left the boss in the car...
I LOVES the .41 MAG. I think I need a Blackhawk to balance out the 41 family.
