Have a line on an unfired 90's Remington Model 7 in .308. Beautiful checkered stock, 18.5 inch barrel, everything I want in a deer rifle. I've read that some of these have trouble holding zero. What has been your experience with these rifles? 2moa and holds its zero is my criteria.

Thanks

If a rifle does not holds it's zero usually it's either the scope or the bedding. Both are fixable.

I imagine it will bark. Have just gone through a old sporterized Enfield saga with drifting zeros between outings and inconsistent accuracy. I'd like to get this rifle but I've come across more than one person with these issues. Anyone have first hand experience with an older model 7?

I would trust guntech's comment. He's accurized LOTS of firearms, particularly Remingtons...

Light barrelled factory rifles as the Model 7 and the 700 Mountain rifles usually shoot close to inch groups. Usually they shoot best with the barrel floating and the action bedded. I would never expect better than inch groups but occasionally they surprise you.

You won't know how well one shoots until you test it.

Maintaining zero has to do with the stock and humidity. Free floating is better at that than a pressure point...

Mine shot about 1.75"-2" groups. I stopped using a lead sled, just utilizing a sandbag rest and it now goes into 1" groups. I sure have to "fight the flinch" as it is LOUD and certainly is lively in the hands being so small and lightweight. But as a field gun, I love it. Easy to carry, handy as hell, and just a near perfect hunting rifle. It is one of 5 hunting rifles I own that is on my "never sell till dead" list. You wont be disappointed in it.

Had a Model 7 in 308. Once it was properly bedded and the barrel free floated it shot about 1 MOA consistently. Brutal little bugger to shoot however, recoil was abusive.

I've had a few of them ! ALL would shoot a 3 shot group no bigger then 1.5 " with Factory ammo ! You will Be good with a Quality scope and mounts - rings ! RJ

Have one in 7mm-08 with the 20 inch barrel. With the original plastic stock it did not shoot well. Now in a B&C with a bedding block and it shoots much better, 1.5" , sometimes better. With the wood stock and your experience bedding rifles you should be fine.

Thank god it wasn't just me that found the recoil was punishing. Thought I was just getting old and needed to wash my big ol' smelly ######.

Bought an x bolt with a 22 inch bbl that is about the same weight as my model seven ss was. Much better balanced to shoot off hand and dosen't beat me like a red headed step child everytime I pull the trigger. I know, I know... Browning. But I got it 30 percent off and man, the ergonomics are perfect to me.

I gave the stainless 308 model seven to the stepson as he needed a rifle, and boy that gun has killed a lot of game. Not sure if I"ve done him a favour or not...
