I purchased a 280 Ross a while ago. Right now it's just a wall hanger. However, it would be nice to fire it every once in a while. I have seen a few recipes on how to convert other bass to make a 280. However, I have no reloading equipment here and I probably won't have any for a while.

So, I have 2 questions;

1) I'm assuming other people have 280 Ross' that they reload and shoot. They have gone through the process and figured everything out. Probably a small group but there has to be someone here that does it. If so could you PM me?

2) If no one actively reloads 280 Ross but they have the capability to put all of the components together, if I sourced everything (if that is even possible) is there someone around that could put it all together?

I'm not sure if this is in the right section or not.

I have a M1905M 3rd type factor prototype which maybe a precursor to the 1907 Deer Stalker?

I first heard about the 280 Ross as a young teenager and always wanted one. My dad's older friends used to talk about like it was a lazer-beamed hammer of Thor.

When I was 16 I stayed over at a friend's place and leaning behind a door was a neat looking rifle. I picked it up. A 280 Ross.

I already owned (and still do) a 303 Ross, a crudely sporterised M-10. The 280 was a sleek sporting rifle. I was in lust!

Many years later I asked buddy about the 280.

"You know, " he said . "I don't know what happened to that gun."

Can you please show us some more pictures?

Does it have the serrated bolt head like the 1907 SDS and the M-10? 1905-M is normally chambered in .303

I have a 1905R in 303 and a M-10 in 280

and exactly 1 round of factory ammo :(

it is on my list of to do, just need to find some time on the metal lathe to make a intermediate forming die and to buy a set of 280 dies.
 
I've made it from both .300 H&H and .375 Ruger. The .300 H&H is easier but some folks are uneasy about the case fireforming in front of the belt. The .375 Ruger requires a few more steps including annealing.
If you aren't setup to reload then I recommend haunting a few gunshows for some Kynoch factory ammo.
There is a member on this board who goes by morrisdcode or something like that. His father had a quantity of Kynoch he's been selling off.
 
HI,NICE RIFLE .YOU MAY WANT TO SLUG THE BORE ,SOME OF THE 280 ROSS SHOOT FINE WITH THE 7MM BULLETS BUT OTHERS SLUG OUT AT .285 -.289 AND REQUIRE THE LARGER DIAMATER BULLETS WHICH ARE HARD TO COME BY.i HAVE A .280 ROSS THAT I LOAD FOR BUT NEVER GOT THE ACCURCY THAT I WAS HOPEING FOR.HAVE SOME .284 NOSSULAR PARTITIONS THAT WAS RECOMENDED TO TRY,HAVE NOT GOT TO IT YET.
 
Tradeex Canada has .287 Woodleigh bullets in 160 and 175 gr listed as 275 H&H. These are the correct bore diameter for the 280 Ross, although as stated some rifles will shoot standard diameter .284 pills.

In my case I get better accuracy with the 7mm bullets than the .287 Woodleighs. My rifle has the Porter peep on the rear bridge but my 60 year old eyes wish it could be scoped.

My 280 bore slugged at .290

I've been converting a bag of original 280 Kynoch cases to boxer on my lathe.

The 300WM I've converted have all failed at the belt after a couple full-pressure firings. I would avoid any belted H&H parent conversion.

I've tried converting 300 RUM, but have unfortunately cracked my 280 Ross sizer in the process, a real shame. You need to turn down the case head of the brass, I didn't turn it down enough.
